Morning Gents,

Wow that is scary. No more bar ends for me - like horns of a bull.

The bar end thing happened to a young kid riding on his own in the Knysna forest. He didnt make it (artery in the crotch - not sure, what its called). Look at the Cedric Garcia video of him in Reunion with an OTB incident.

And there are some gnarly pictures of that kid at Sun City....

It can happen very quickly and can be very difficult to assist as allegedly the person will start jerking violently as they bleed out if it is arterial. What i read you have about 2 to 3 minutes....

I heard about a severed Femoral from a brake lever.  Guy passed, but was resuccitated by medical staff.

I heard that he is still in hospital and not in good shape.

Any accurate news on this?

Nothing.  Just heard it from someone who heard it.  BUt it sounded very bad. He "died" whilst medical staff attended to him before a doctor allegedly managed to pull the artery out from the leg and pinch it to stop the bleeding (and get blood pressure up again??? I'm not a doctor).  they then managed to resuccitate him.

But with that amount of blodd loss I don't know how you escape without a hypoxic brain injury.

Worst is, it apparently happened during a neutral start and he just fell awkwardly.

This is now the fourth different story I have heard. We rode passed him, 3-4k's into day one. (still on the tar just before a bridge). All I can say there was a shyte load of blood. The medics just arrived when we passed him.

Must say the common story is the brake lever piecing him somewhere, groin, stomach or chest. Hope he is alright. It wasn't a pleasant sight.

Also heard it was him and his partner who touch wheels.

The guy who hit the conctrete bridge at Grabouwe and the guy who had his femoral artery sliced by his brake leaver are 2 different accidents on the epic. The 2nd one involving his fem artery was bad and he had to be resuscitated and ended up in hospital but is ok.

Yoh, hectic stuff. I also had to pull the brake lever from my leg when I was a laaitie. This also after I touched wheels with the neighbour's kid while racing our bmx's around the house. Just missed the femoral artery.

Heal up well. All the best

Stringbean, any idea when the second one happened?

It was day 4 or 5.The crash happened a few groups behind me but got the information from one of the Hyena's.Some of the back groups were quite disturbed passing a guy busy been resuscitated. There is no doubt if he was at home riding his normal trails he would be dead. The doctors were there in under 5 min.
