Issues I'm having

Hi all,

I recently purchased a road bicycle to start cycling again and I've done a couple of rides (not as many as I'd like but my working schedule doesn't allow for more rides) but I'm not happy after each ride.

1. I am constantly changing my position on the seat - I guess it feels like I'm sliding off the seat.

2. I am constantly changing my hand positions - from near the brakes to top of the handle bar and back again.

I took my bicycle to a cycle shop and they changed my handle bar, apparently they made it straighter (angle) but I'm still having the issues.

Advice?

Did you go for a bike set up? I had to go through 2 set up at different shops and methods and finally found my sweet spot.

Nope I haven't gone for a proper proper bike setup.

I'm trying to find a place here in CPT that does it.

Assuming that the bike is setup correctly, you probably just need more time on it.

Are you wearing good gloves and riding with proper cycling shorts?

I also moved around a lot in the beginning - it gets better and easier, you've just got to put in the time.

I've recently had a (basic) bike fit done at a Spez Concept store (R550), after more than 2 years of riding and almost 2000km on the specific bike it made a massive difference in comfort. I had a chat to the person doing the fitting whom said that the Handlebar width/angle is rarely a problem (as long as your reach is acceptable, which is fixed by the stem length). We also spent some time to get my saddle angle/position just right in order for a straight back (which was my main problem with discomfort) and better knee angle.

Your core strenght is probably poor .You are not getting your balance right and also need more suppleness ,hence the moving about .Start with basics .Ride more ,stretch more ,more core training .Ride with a tool in your pocket and stop and change until things are more comfortable .As you get fitter and core strenght increases your posture will also change

Well, maybe so, but I wanted to mention that I'm not a NEW cyclist, I just have been out of it for a couple of years (±4 to be exact) and when I first started cycling, I only had issues and it was due to my 'seat post height' and once that was corrected, the rest was a pleasure (minus getting fit etc) - I'm not exactly fit now, but I'm not weak either (due to my job) but I'm having uncomfortable feelings now, feelings I didn't have 'way back when'

Bike 'set ups' are over rated ....

BOOM!   Yes bitches, that just happenend

Hahaha! You're a chop you know that! :D

Well, I've just come back from William's Bike Shop and I'm very happy.

The ride to the store (4km) was rough and the ride back (I took a longer route) was better.

The uncomfortable feeling is not there anymore and I'm just feeling pain in my ass (where it's supposed to be) and I am actually happy or should I say, happier!

Cost me R250 and I didn't feel like the 'bike setup' session was rushed at all, he explained as he went, made a few comments about my pedaling etc.

So maybe it's over rated, but I'm already feeling better about getting on the bike instead of hesitant.

Oh for those interested; he raised my seat posted by approx 45mm as well as adjusted my seat angle slightly (I also found out that I have a MTB seat), he also dropped my handle bar by approx 2mm and changed my shoes/cleats slightly.
