Education - Hub Support

The basic story:  My job and current line of work has dried up.  I've been told by my boss that it's not working out and that we're going to be closing up shop from the beginning of June, so I've got two regular pay days left.

For a while now I've been looking at further studies, but financially it's just not possible.  I've got two young kids in pre school and myself and my wife are at the bottom of the barrel in terms of salaries and that leaves us literally scratching for change a week before payday to be able to buy food.  It's been tough, but we've been getting by.  The problem is I don't want to just be getting by, I want to be improving!

So for my Hub plea - would anyone be able to assist me in furthering my education?  I'm wanting to do an online course through UCT / Get Smarter in Advanced Project Management.  The course starts on the 4th May and fees need to be in by the end of the month.  It costs R15,900 if paid for by the end of the month otherwise R5,500 per month for three months.  I've watched a few of these courses go by without me being able to do anything, but yesterday feels like a catalyst that's making me jump up and try to change my life.

I hate begging and have always prided myself on the fact that everything that I have I've worked for since I was 13 delivering the Cape Times before dawn every day.  But times are tough at the moment and I don't see myself being able to do this without outside assistance.

I have few assets at the moment as I've sold a lot to get us through tough times, but I'll try to bring in whatever money I can by selling what I have.  I can always buy more stuff when things improve.

I hope that I don't get flamed for essentially trying my luck on here, but nothing ventured nothing gained, right?

Free project management help / advice / support to any backer once I've completed the course!

Cheers,

Chris

Sorry to hear, what line of work are you currently doing? You might find someone could identify a role you could grow into.

good luck,

Steve

Currently I'm the parts guy for an offroad bike brand (we import the bikes).  I have previously worked as a service and workshop manager for a car workshop in London which was voted as a top 5 garage in the UK based on customer satisfaction.

But these jobs in this country pay less than peanuts.

will the course guarantee you a job??

No, but it will provide a lot more options for me.  And it's a career direction which is more than I have right now.

Why don't you rather look at something like a PMP? Depending on if you qualify. It's internationally recognised and definitely worth a lot in therms of PM work.

I'm not personally big on the social media things like Facebook and so on, but, I've heard of requests like this going viral on there and people getting help funding the things they need to do.

I know very few people who could do a single payment of R16,000, but, a lot of people contributing whatever they can would still get you the same result.

Crowd funding is very big at the moment, so although I'm taking a chance, I am feeling hopeful and optimistic about the future.

A single donation would be incredible!  But unlikely...   Small bits and pieces was my thinking - that way I could try to make the monthly payments.

Have you considered student loan, personal loan etc? I know it's taking on debt, but if you feel the course will add value/open up opportunities then you should be able to cover it.

Otherwise just get a bike on finance, flog it here and worry about implications later(just kidding, don't do that!).

in what industry

and what is your idea of extremly well

Don't forget location. Jozi and CT do not necessarily pay equally for the same job with the same company and the candidate has the same experience and credentials even!

Do you have somewhere set up that people could deposit money?

You obviously have options like PayPal, or just your personal bank account.

Do you have a link to the course?

Please don't misunderstand this next statement because I am not questioning you personally, merely stating how it could be seen due to the fact we all get mail and smses nearly every day with that "Nigerian prince who needs our help" - it has potentially made a lot of people cynical.

How will people know their money is going to the studies and somebody just collecting money to go to the pub or on holiday or something?

Pot, I don't want to discourage you to study further, but UCT/GetSmarter courses carry no NQF value, it's all online and there is no exams involved. They are also extremely expensive and for proper PM that would not be the right way to go.

You need to cast your net wider, look at more options and if you really need to get a piece of paper in short term, look at College SA, which is a lot cheaper for the same type of certificate and you can start immediately.

The problem is being able to pay for it.  As of last week I would not have been able to afford it.  Now it's even worse!  Getting a loan just isn't a viable option.
