Having crashed hard on both lycra and thick baggies, I would pick the thick baggies every time. Plus I like pockets and not looking like a dick wandering around after races in my ballet outfit. My wife says she misses my lycra days  but even that won't get me back in em...:-)

Watched the Peaty movie again last night. Those skin suits were properly strange looking and most of them had thick armour underneath.  \

Off topic again, man, Hiils run in the 2008 WChamps was insane...

Where the tree fell down a few months ago obscuring it?

Not sure. That one I speak of is about 50m long 6m wide on average with lots of different lines. I use it for skills lessons.

Not really a rock garden, more of a massive rutted rock...but it's super fun!

I tried out flats by doing the unthinkable. I grabbed wife's pedals, I traded with a friend for some CB cleated ones x2  (best trade ever). They are some giant flats retail around 330 and have very spiky pins ( they are pointed with slight hollow on tip). I grabbed my pair of old work shoes ( Merrel hiking shoes they are worn smooth). Jumped on bike and went for it, first 3 rides I felt like i was bound to have some shin bone sticking out soon. I bought some shin pads and kept at it. I have replaced pedals with Saints and the merrels still working like a dream. I have become very unfit due to time constraints and being a lazy ass so walking shoes are helping a lot!

I would like to buy some 5.10's but I am a size 13-14 and these are just too expensive to buy without knowing how they fit. I might take the leap one day but for now I can always go back to LOOK cleats/spez shoes if my merrels are stuffed.

Yip!

Some of the teams did the Epic with them. They where originally designed as "Enduro" race shoes, but are great for any application: Trail, XC etc.

More info here: http://fiveten.com/products/footwear-detail/14958-kestrel-team-black

The left shoe on the bottom shelf is the Impact VXi clipless. Great clipless shoes for DH and Enduro.

I have a pair of Kestrels and they are awesome, just stiff enough and they are flat so nice to walk in.

I recently bough freeriders for wife. Freeriders for me and sleuth for me as well.

Sizing on my freeriders wasnt cricket.

Dirt merchant had me the correct size in 3 days.

Highly recommend them.

I only deal with two bike shops....

Dirt merchant and bicycle supply chain.

I considered ordering some of those Adidas Terrex Trail Cross to replace a tired pair of Impact VXIs...

...but alas, I had just taken delivery of some replacement Impacts when I came across the Terrexes, so I had to restrain myself.

I must say though (and I have said it before), the Impact VXI's have to be my favourite FiveTens (and I am now sitting with 7 pairs... I feel like a Sandton soccer-mom stereotype)

Uppers still in great condition after plenty of abuse.

Soles were getting a little tired though. I shimmy my feet quite a lot on the pedals, hence the gauges. But there is still plenty life in them.

I rode the new ones for the first time last Friday. That new FiveTen tackiness is something one has to experience for themselves!
