I couldn't stand it and phoned the reserve. It is not open. The guy on the phone was friendly and helpful, encouraged me to call again as they hope to have it open soon but was unable to give me a date.

Dam dam dam dam dam.

I'll sign an indemnity saying I'll bring my own damn water and not hold them responsible should I be found dehydrated and curing like biltong on the tar.

Just need them to flipping open already.

I agree but was wondering if it wasn't the fire hazard that gave them the regulatory problem.

Anybody been able to get in and ride SBR yet?

Thinking of making a turn in there this weekend if its open

Quote from their FB page yesterday:

"Representatives from the Gauteng Provincial Department of Infrastructure Development (GDID) will visit the Reserve tomorrow to sign off the work on the water supply. An announcement regarding the reopening of the Reserve will be made in due course. The water supply project has been the responsibility of GDID (not the Reserve) and was supposed to be finished 10 years ago."

Sanitation would be a problem, unless you bring along your own porto loo.

Oh like the porto loos that they have spread across the Cradle, or along the various MTB routes?

Come on, lets not be silly about this.

Not been silly at all, the Reserve is in a closed area and in the past there have been numerous complaints of riders urinating and cr@pping all over even with facilities available , how much more so when they are closed.

Two words, Bear Grylls. Solves the peeing and hydration issue in one go.

I tried my luck at the Kareekloof entrance again this morning. Still closed but I was told that they might be open next Friday.

Mulbarton, Glenvista and Mondeor - the combinations are endless, and some of the gradients are stupid (we don't get these gradients in a race, but they're worth the effort).

You have to be prepared to stop at traffic lights robots though - and watch out for cars/traffic.

Let's assume you start at the Panorama Shopping Centre, Thaba Trails or Rietvlei (all relatively close to each other)

  • Up Butchers Hill, left into Impala.
  • Right into Springbok, right into Silver, right into Peggy Vera.
  • All the way to the top, left into Branksome Heights.
  • Right into Carol, Right into Pierpont, Right into Wisane.
  • All the way up to the top (near Southgate), then right into Constantia.
  • Left into Ashden, right into Columbine.
  • Straight up Columbine, over Klipriver drive into Vorster.
  • Left into Lois (passed Builders), left into Amanda.
  • Right into Beryl, then right into Oakdene Parks Drive.
  • Left into Rifle Range, left onto Klipriver Drive.
    • Optional: left into Bellairs, Left onto Walsingham Road, Left UP Biggersberg and Charmion, left into Vista, Left into van Beek and left into Klipriver drive (11% climb).
  • Passed Panorama shopping centre, left at Aspen Hills estate.
  • Left into Klipview Road, left into South Road, Right into Harling.
  • Right, and UP Hythe Road, over Bellairs, right into Mount Pellan.
  • UP Mount Pellan, right into Ouderberg, right into Basroyd.
  • Right into Pieter Ackroyd, Right DOWN Comaro (smile at the camera).
  • Left on Michelle (UP to Meyersdal), right on Hennie Alberts, right on Swartkoppies -
    • Turning right at Klipriver Drive back to Panorama will give you about 53Km, so you can always do two laps of the above route.
  • Right at T-junction (Lido) and up to Southgate.
  • Right left on Columbine, right on Rifle Range.
  • Right on Xavier, left on Vleiroos Road, right on Gerda (becomes Frangipani).
  • Left on Nossob, left on Swartgoud, left onto Columbine.
  • Right onto Klipriver Drive, and end at Panorama Shopping Centre.

77Km, 1306m of climbing.

Like I said - there are 101 different options here, depending on your willingness to explore and most importantly be prepared to stop at traffic lights.

That Ouderberg climb in Bassonia is not for sissies... all I could think was:

1) If I stop I cant get going again

2) who builds a road like this

3) Why did Gerald tell me this road exists

Give him a klap if you see him... did you at least do it at the end of of your ride?
