WTB Wolverine 2.3 tires - any good

Anyone have any experience with these? Im looking for Maxxis Ardent race 2.25 or 2.3 but cant seem to find and a bike shop recommended WTB Wolverine 2.3, they seem to be around 200 a tire more…

I'm currently running a Wolverine 2.3 on the rear.

Changed over from Schwalbe Nobby Nics. Best thing I could've done.

Why? Grip and speed?

 

Oh and is the side wall lekker thick?

 

Also got a better offer on a Web trailboss. Any comment on the trail Nos?

Great rear tyre, but they wear pretty quickly on tar. Roll fast and good grip in the corners. Wouldn't use it on the front, but that's just me...

Great grip and nice and quick. 

The side walls are much thicker than the Nobby Nics I had on. 

Also, as droo said, wouldn't use it on the front. I have a WTB Vigilante for that job.

Can somebody elaborate why you don't use it on the front. Because a lbs I bought 1 from said this is the front tyre you need for grip. I had a crossmark on the front and lost the front a few times. Haven't lost the front yet with the wolverine.

 

They less puncture resistant than the crossmarks.

The crossmark is NOT a tyre renowned for grip. Frankly, a semi slick would have offered more grip than one of those things.

 

coming from the cmark on the front, the Wolverine would have been a revelation ito grip. Far better rubber compound, better tread pattern and just plain BETTER. But unless you're permanently riding hardpack or gravel roads, the Wolverine would be better on the back and with a more aggressive tyre up front - Trail Boss, Magic Mary, Nobby Nic, Ardent etc...

I do love different opinions. I love the Wolverine.... As a front tyre. Add a Nineline to the rear and you have a super fast rolling combo that's perfect for xcm and dryer jhb conditions. Maybe not so good for roots and mud though.

 

WTB tyres seal really nicely. Most with a floorpump. Winner winner.

As I said above. For hardpack, gravel travel and such, it's a brilliant tire with fast rolling, grippy characteristics. But if you're pushing it harder, and have very changeable terrain, then it would be better relegated to the back and have something meatier make its way to the front.

WTB tyres are AWESOME.

I run 29er wolverine 2.2 on the rear and 2.3 Weirwolf on the front of my spez camber.

Fast AND grippy.  Perfect for Gauteng conditions - hardpack, sand, loose gravel, even softer soil.  However, they don't like mud/wet much - I have found that they don't clear mud very well.

The nicest thing about these tyres is how progressive they are - unless you're a tool (like me), you always know how close you are to the limits of grip.

BTW, they are an absolute pain to fit to standard roval rims on the camber - I've heard that it's easier when you have proper tubeless rims.

They are pretty huge volume tyres, was considering but not if they wear fast. Hence why I've given up on Schwalbes for now.
