Physio vs. Chiropractor

Hi guys/girls.

I have some back pain that is getting to me. I have been to my GP and he gave me a Voltaren shot, he said it does not feel like a slipped disk or as if anything is out of place. The shot seems to have helped as have the anti inflamitorys. But it still hurts and I'm getting miff with not doing any thing. So who do I go to? A physio or a chiro?

Thanks!

Physio, they have to register with HPCSA. They are more scientifically / medically trained (IMO).

I have yet to understand why chiropractors call themselves Dr.

That said you get some shocking physios. Go to someone with at least an OMT postgrad diploma.

I asked the same question once, and was asked "are you injured?". I wasn't... went to the chiro. Turns out it was a slipped disc, and rest is what sorted it out...

can i vote for biokinetikist.....having been through an extensive therapy session with one for running I can only have good things to say about their scientific approach to reducing pains as a result of sport

Also a good idea. Generally physios should do the acute treatment and rehab then a bio should ensure longterm rehab to prevent recurrence of the injury.

The most important thing to do first is getting a proper diagnosis. Will a physio be able to do it? I doubt.

The better chiro will at least make an initial diagnosis using X rays, and will refer you to a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon if it is serious. Pm me if I can provide you with the name of a very professional chiro.

There is a very limited role for using an xray in the work up of back pain. The most common problems are prolapsed disks or locked facet joints, neither of which are diagnosable on xray. These are soft tissue injuries and any decent physio is better at making the diagnosis than the majority of GPs. The remote chance that you have a vertebral stress fracture or osteoarthritis is about all an xray can show. Try extensive rehab before seeing an orthopaedic or neurosurgeon. You dont want spinal surgery unless it is a matter of or death - i.e. you want to take your own life because of pain.

Good research has show the same long term outcomes of spinal surgery compared to conservative management for 18 months.

Disclaimer: I am a doc, not an orthopaedic nor neuro surgeon. I am married to a physio with a masters degree orthopaedic rehab who is doing a PhD thru sports science institute.
