MENSA, DENSA and now CYCENSA

Esquire

Recommended Posts

You have heard of the super-intelligent MENSA and James Clarke's DENSA? Well now there is a new one - CYCENSA. All you need do to be a member is ride around in the dark without a front light so you are invisible to pedestrians and runners. If you want to be a Special Member do the above wearing dark clothes and of course, if you want to be a Super-Special Member, you do the above without a rear light as well (often seen in our area).

I write this because I often have to jump out of the way of Cyclists on their R30,000+ bikes because they are too cheap to buy a front light so we can see them. An incident this morning was really unpleasant. I suggested (Politely) to a cyclist in Edison Cres, Sunninghill, that he should get a front light so we could see hims and got a whole lot of abuse back.

Now I am sure that most cyclists are not like this prize burk, but it does not reflect well on your sport.

Just for information, I run with a reflective vest, a reflective ankle strap AND a red cycle light on my belt, because nothing reflects without light. You can see me, but other pedestrians don't look like Christmas trees and without a front light, will not see you coming.

How many want to join CYCENSA?

Road cyclists are generally an arrogant bunch who can find no fault with themselves whatsoever.

An example....

On this mornings ride, we were about  to pull off from a 4 way intersection after the traffic light had turned green, when a car on our left came to a sudden stop when faced with a red traffic light. One of the guys took exception with the way the driver had braked and shouted out at the top of his lungs to the driver " YOU FU@#IN P%&S" !!

My question to him was, "What the Fu#k was that for ? " to which he mumbled some unintelligible reply.

Good on you Esquire and welcome to The Hub !!

Esquire, I do agree with you, BUT, turn your eyes to the runners as well!!!  I have had sooooo many close shaves with 2 or 3 guys out running the I've lost count.  Second thing is huge bunches running in the one complete lane!  I've had to stop as a car was coming from the front and it was like being back at school again.  The abuse and "stamping" going on while they ran around (actually try to run over) me.

Esquire, the irony is that when a person like yourself make a simple fair request, the cyclist (most of them) immediately feels intimidated and believes that the person making the request is intruding the cyclist space.

Exactly, and not using lights on our R30,000.00 bikes is not cause we're too cheap, it  is a style/weight issue...Big%20smile

Road cyclists in general have a K@K attitude.

I was out riding early one morning - must have been a club ride that came past ooooooooo about 150 of them. Not one flipping nut had the decency to say hello or anything .. despite me being chirpy.

I put alot of effort in to get into the K group for argus this yr - but not a damn will i ride again in a single letter group...most unfriendly grumpiest bunch of wally's this side of the universe. wouldnt even tell me the names of the beaches we rode past !!

Ewep....

I don't think it was because you were on the bike....just because you look like you do!!

Hello my seun.

Esquire
I totally agree.  If you are out on the road after sunset, be seen or die.  Easy really.  Like you say, R30k bike without a R100 light....not rocket science.

As for the abuse.  Most Jhb people does not have a soul.  I can count them on one hand and most of them are on the hub....

But in general the human population have become rude and abusive toward their fellow human beings.

When last did someone actually greet you walking past you in a mall??

Weird hey?!

Then again....If Ewep  would greet me in a mall, I WOULD LIFT MY SKIRT AND RUN!!!!!

Fast!!

Now I may not be a 'real' roadie but I would consider some of these comments a gross generalisation! I ride road bike every morning in the Jo'burg south area (Lido roads) and I reckon the cyclists I see with no lights at all are in the minority.

Think about it, it is a lot easier to run without a light than to be bombing along at 30k's an hour on a road where as previously stated here there are potholes that can swallow a man and his bike with no trace left behind .......

I have also had my fair share of run ins with runners, commuters (on foot and bike) that are barely visible but hey I get over it and go on with my life but that's just me.

So those cyclists that do ride without lights are just stupid but it aint the norm. This is as always my personal opinion so use it don't use it up to you!
