Copper plating a frame

I've done a frame. Call Anderbolt Electroplaters in Boksburg and speak to Darren. He's one of my teammates, a keen cyclist, so you know it'll be in good hands. He did that frame for Mike.

You can choose from different finishes too. Antique or polished.

So maybe a silly question, but how durable is that finish? Like if I were to do a mountain bike would I be able to just polish up the scuffs and carry on?

Has anyone measured how much a coating weighs?

Can't really answer that. But if it's a steel MTB, then what ever small weight it adds shouldn't be significant. If it needs to be ultra light then is steel the way to go vs Carbon or Ally...?

If "steel is real" and all that, you're going that way because it's about the feel of the ride, and or how much easier it is to weld and work with etc.

Cant vouch for any type of durability, it's not that type of bike so wasn't a concern for me.

More for show than go.

In my opinion it won't look good on a MTB (not the one you're building). Unless it's an old retro build.

It is a bit of a 'retro' colour, and a bit better suited to something along classic lines.

Just my opinion though.

Thanks. I found him online yesterday and chatted to him. He sounds like a stand up guy.

I would imagine it would be like chrome, pretty hardy finish.

Chrome doesnt do well down here at the coast. Its slightly pourous and what happens is the sea air gets under the chrome and rust gets into the steel and the chrome starts being "pushed" away from the steel.

Inland however is very different and chrome stands up well to those conditions.

I would imagine this copper/bronze coating would behave in the same way.

My intention is to leave it out in the rain once or twice once it's built, to make it look a little more aged/antique. Get that bit of green to it...

Bring it down to Durban, you only need a 2hr ride to get that effect :)
