Fairweather Riders

We've had 31, 27 and 25 club members ride our 3 club champs events, so far - all starting at 07:00. Some leave from home to get to the start point before sunrise.

Seems the friendly competition has worked well to keep them on the bike through winter.

i've done one pre 7am ride this winter. I decided never again. so i'm definitely a fair weather rider and I'm ok with that.

Do you ride during the course of the day during the winter months? Pre dawn rides don't always work for everyone regardless of the time of year.

Best part of solo rides I can go when I'm ready, if I'm popping close by for a ride I like late afternoon rides as well. If I'm meeting ppl, especially if I have to drive out far, 8am max! With our winters here, I do try avoid being out between 11-2pm though - that sun can be harsh.

I've always found that rides starting at 8 or 9 for morning rides and rides starting at 1 (in winter) or 2 (in summer) for afternoon rides work for me. In the cape rain is the only thing I worry about as it can change from being a light drizzle to being a heavy downpour in seconds. While I enjoy riding in the rain I don't try to ride on day's where the rain has varied a lot between drizzle and thunderous downpours.

Awsome info. Never thought about that. Thanks tombeej!

Tommeke showing how it's done going into the wind 'Belgian style'. Super smooth - head and upper body is dead still, not a hint of a wobble (watch the tyres on the white line) while going full gas.

Style personified.

Interesting how people see things differently according to what is 'normal' where they live.

As a DBN rider I can't do cold, but the wind is always a constant companion, esp. where we train on the beachfront circuit. Because the circuit's got 4 sides you're always going into a block headwind or crosswind or downwind.

Gautengers ride in temps we can't get our heads around. How you do it, we have no idea. But we know how to ride in wind, how to move 'through' it and make it work for you, instead of trying to muscle through it like it's something to overcome.

I can always see a coastal rider vs. the inland riders when racing. Coastal riders ride 'the Belgian way'.

Belgian style... almost

It's only cold if the kit is wrong. The hardest part is getting out of bed when your darling wants you to stay in. [emoji14]

Nothing says "wake up" quite like that moment when you jump back into bed after spending 2 hours on the bike in the cold - cold meets warm, and you get that Dr Evil laugh going... "muahahaha"
