What do you guys think of the 2016 Giant propel SLR Alloy? Looks good and has very good components on, but its an alloy bike. Is alloy catching up to carbon and what's the weight between alloy and carbon. I'm looking at buying a new bike. My eyes are set on the Giant propel advanced 2, but with the new alloy bike and the good components it has on, I might change.

When I changed frames from a ONCE TCR alu Giant to the TCR 2 Carbon, the difference in weight was 700g.  And to be brutally honest, the only difference I felt in the ride quality was that the Campy-rattle on the Alu bike was gone on the Carbon one and when hammering hard with a Zipp 606 carbon rear wheel, it used to touch the alu chainstays and on the carbon it doesn't.  But the alu frame was also 10 years old.

Giant makes brilliant alu frames.

I doubt the weight will be much different. The advanced 2 uses a different carbon to the higher spec propels and is not a light bike by any stretch, so you might be surprised. I'd imagine it will be less than 1kg difference.

Very nice...looking for a n+1 bike and this might just be it...are those wheels standard and any ideas on pricing?

They say those wheels are standard and the price around 2300$, but won't know what imports and everything will cost.

Less than 1kg!? You can bet your socks it'll be less than that. Giant are wizards with alu, and even on the reign the difference between alu and carbon is only 200g.

My (un)educated guess is that the difference will be in the 150-250g range, but the major benefit of the carbon Will be the stiffness at the BB.

The CAAD 10 ultegra was showing as 2300 dollars this year and when I asked for a price at a giant dealer in SA I was quoted 34k. So don't get too excited. Our importers tend to pull the piss as much as possible.

Well that's a disappointment, Giant prices are always reasonable. Will hope for the best
