What's up with BMC in SA?

I heard a rumour a while back that BMC are pulling out of SA due to current agents going under. Google search for BMC in SA doesn't come up with much.

I'm looking to buy a BMC off the hub but just wanted to make sure that the brand will still be supported in SA.

Anyone know the status of the brand and backup in SA?

Yeah VeloLife went belly up so BMC no longer had a local agent.  I heard from the LBS that BMC were coming in directly into SA and had opened up a warehouse in Springfield Park in Durban.  Seems like that is wrong.

It is a serious pity.  BMC is a great brand with phenonmenal bikes (road and mtb).  I bought a GF01 from the store in Hillcrest just before they went under and I am very impressed.

One has to wonder how VeloLife went under when the cycling industry is doing so well in SA.  Plus they had good brands like Catlike helmets and BMC bikes.

BMC are definitely here to stay. BMC Switzerland decided late last year to come into South Africa directly and started to put this into play. 2015 they were still running off stock that had been ordered by VeloLife but now 2016 stock has already started to come in.

The current dealers that have signed with BMC are:

Swiss Cycles, Rosebank

Design in Motion, Morningside

Bike Plus, Constantia

Enduro World, Bloem

BMC are here to stay - if you want any info on BMC call the guys at Swiss Cycles in Rosebank - they have a concept type store and know the brand very well. The guy to speak to is Justin - think he just got back from Switzerland so he has all the know how.

OK thanks but will Swiss Cycles still honour the warranty of bikes bought while Velolite had agency? If i buy a 2014 2nd bike will the warranty still be in play?

It is industry practise in SA not to warranty second hand bikes. Perhaps BMC is the exception to this rule, but I very much doubt.

thought as much. but servicing and parts won't be a problem then?

Unless it is a dual suspension there are no proprietry parts to worry about.

Not just in SA does this apply...look on any international brands sites and the warranty will apply to the original owner only. For some reason it seems to be a mind set in SA that anything second hand (apart from maybe a car) comes with a form of warranty...

Don't where you get that idea.  The USA is big on this transferable warrantee idea.  It is just plain old good customer service.  See one such example here: http://www.vortexoptics.com/content/vip_warranty

Fair enough, that's one company and not bike related...

EG:

Specialized bikes This warranty is void if the bicycle or frameset was not purchased new or not

properly assembled by an authorized Specialized dealer

Giant: GIANT WARRANTYGiant warrants for the original owner only the frame, rigid fork, or original component parts of each new Giant brand bicycle to be free ...

BMCBuyers of a bicycle from Model Year 2011 onwards have the option of registering their frames within 30 days after purchase with a BMC retailer on the BMC website, which will extend the warranty period for the frame from 3 to 5 years. The warranty period is not extended after repair/exchange of the frame.

Oakley:

OAKLEY EYEWEAR LIMITED WARRANTY

Oakley eyewear products are warranted for two years from the date of purchase against manufacturer’s defects. The warranty is valid only to the original purchaser with a proof of purchase from an Authorized Oakley Dealer that clearly shows the purchase date.

So as you can see, if you are the original purchaser (and have proof thereof) and have not bought it 2nd hand you will qualify (globally) for a claim...All the above can be found by doing a simple Google search...
