What is the rule about riding on the N2?

Saw three groups of cyclists yesterday morning on the N2 leaving Cape Town just below Sir Lowry's Pass at about 06h30.

It seems that the cyclists belong to Wannabees club.

My understanding is that cycling on the N2 is illegal.

Is this understanding correct?

Unfortunately the law in SA is not always consistent. I also travel along the R59 daily bottom line cycling along the R59 is not safe even with a vehicle following you.

Back to the topic though. As the OP stated it's the R59 and therefore a regional road and thus cyclist allowed on it? I don't know this road thus can't really comment but I do know the R in R59 stands for regional roads. Or is it Metropolitan roads that cyclists are allowed to cycle on........?

The regional/national/metro does not tell you if it is freeway or not. According the the traffic act, the way to tell is if the road is freeway or not, is if it is sign posted as such.  From the definitions section of the act:

'freeway'  means a public road or a section of a public road which has been designated as a freeway by an appropriate road traffic sign;

The R59 is signed as a free way between Meyerton and Joburg. Here is a streeview of such a sign: https://www.google.co.za/maps/@-26.4166758,28.0752756,3a,75y,349.77h,59.52t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJPVokWUn0p7LsaI4rzBG5g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

Another way to tell is on google maps, freeways are orange. Non freeways are yellow/white. However this is not always accurate, e.g. The N14 in the Muldersdrift area is marked incorrectly.

According to google maps, The N2 is freeway up to Somerset west. (Here is the sign that marks the freeway end: https://www.google.co.za/maps/@-34.0820428,18.8266672,3a,75y,140.6h,67.14t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sxGhiJZ8OpjLM4JxShIf4MQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en)

East of Somerset west is not freeway, so these guys not breaking the law.

Which bit is incorrectly marked? From the on/off ramps with the R512 back towards Muldersdrift, which is yellow, or north-eastwards towards Diepsloot, which is orange?

SO between Saturday and this morning coming to work 3 people were killed in accidents along the R59 between Alberton and Meyerton.

One was a pedestrian from what i saw this morning... I hope i dont look back one day at this thread with "it was only a matter of time" type comment with a cyclist or worse a group of cyclists being knocked down.

Still regularly see groups riding 2 abreast along the highway... there are a few different roads that run in the same directions that will be a lot safer.

FWIW:

You may need to watch out for insurance clauses on this one as well. If you get in to trouble on a highway and there is an insurance claim from it - like a life claim, they may have cause to repudiate.

Same with major medical expenses.

You weren't meant to be there on a bicycle and a long legal fight that they have a chance of winning is cheaper than a couple of million payout.

Not so. You also see guys cycling on the section between Segdgefield and Plet. The rule is: Blue road signs = freeway, green road signs = no freeway.

The 4 passes route is popular this time of the year with DC coming up. The trick is to hit Sir Lowries Pass early before the wind gets hold of you.

What is the rule for cycling on highways?

I live in the meyrton area and work in JHB so travel on the R59 highway between meyerton and alberton daily and in my opinion is one of the more dangerous highways in gauteng at the moment. Traffic volumes are crazy and i see accidents regularly... but now ive seen a new type of stupid that paints all cyclists with the same brush.

Not just your opinion. I believe the R59 between the N12 and V-town is statistically the most dangerous piece of tar locally. Apparently it's because there are so many long and straight stretches (high speed) but only two lanes (congestion).

The most dangerous roads in SA - although all N roads:

The N12 from Springs to Witbank

Number seven on the list is the stretch of the N12 that runs from Springs to Witbank, in Mpumalanga. This length of road had 39 recorded deaths in 2011, most of which were due to human error.

The N2 from Durban to Tongaat

The N2’s first appearance on this list relates to the stretch of the road from Durban to Tongaat. On this part of the N2, a total of 42 deaths were recorded.

The N4 from Middleburg to Belfast

The N4 is no short stretch but this route from Middleburg to Belfast has recorded an unusually high number of deaths. 46 deaths in this stretch of road put it into 5th place on the list.

The N1 from Polokwane to Makhado

As the longest national road in South Africa, it isn’t surprising that the N1 is on the list. The part of the N1 that runs from Polokwane to Makhado is one of the most dangerous, with 47 deaths recorded and a high number of road accident claims.

The N1 from Makhado to Polokwane

It appears that the reverse trip, from Makhado to Polokwane, is even more dangerous, with a total of 54 deaths reported in 2011.

The N2 from Umtata to Kokstad

The N2 is on the list a second time for the stretch from Umtata to Kokstad. Here a shockingly high total of 72 deaths occurred in a single year.

The N2 from East London to Umtata

The N2 has been called one of the deadliest roads in the world – and the deadliest stretch of this road is the one from East London to Umtata. In 2011 alone, this part of the N2 claimed 90 lives.

Other than cycling around and around Plett/Knysna/Sedgefield, the N2 is the only tarred road we have to ride on.

It's not ideal, but we have no choice.

A following vehicle on a highway where the vehicle is taking up motorway space is stupid.

Quite a few cyclists use the N4 between Montana and Hornsnek.

I only took up road cycling a few months ago. MTB is awesome, as I ride on whatever surface is presented. Obviously not the same on a road bike...

Anyway, to my South is the city of Pretoria, to the Norfff are narrow roads with soft shoulders. I also went twice on the N4 looking for some open road and a wide shoulder and fewer chucked beer bottles. I know I'm not supposed to be there, and had a little fright at an off-ramp.

So what would people actually suggest as a "safe" route? I'm not keen on the freeway, but then where to? Doing laps on Botha?

I have also found that people that are using it travelling from JHB towards V-town seem to be gatvol by the time they get to that stretch and in such a hurry to get home weather from work during the week or on weekends.
