Surely one should dress for the fall, and not the ride?

Ever wondered why most cyclist don't wear any better protection?  and I'm including myself here as well....

Is it uncomfortable?
too heavy?
too hot?
Risk worth the gain?

What's the reason why people are willing to risk going 50km/h down the road, or down a rocky step, and wearing only spandex?

There has to be some major advances in fabric tech, that a jacket can be breathable? Or did we just accept this behaviour?

Surely it should be left to personal preference? Other than protecting your pip. If you don't want to wear the protection you must deal with the consequences, same as other aspects of life.

It is all to do with risk and chance. What is the risk of falling off your bicycle and what is the chance it will happen? Doing downhill events is high risk and high chance so you wear appropriate attire. Road racing is low risk and low chance so you can wear spandex.

Depends on what type of riding youre doing, but really, all of those reasons you mentioned.

If youre riding XC, try wearing full downhill kit and see how much fun you have.

Best compromise if you really feel you want to wear as much protection as possible, is get a nice big hydration pack, moer all you pads etc in there and then put them on when you get to the top of the hill. #endurostyle :P

...cos when I go out, I don't plan to fall, I plan to ride!...if I fall, I'll clean up the mess afterwards ????

Your house might be broken into by some malignant comrades . . .

Do you walk around or go to sleep like this?

No, but I will now ????

I think the point the op is perhaps making is considering technological advances why has riding gear not progressed past Lycra. I'm sure they could make some lightweight, unobtrusive and breathable gear with some very solid built in crash landing protection but the cost would be crazy, imagine the cost of Assos bibs but with something like that built in.

As a teenager I remember coming off my bicycle at about 50km/h downhill on a latarite gravel pavement (don't ask). Kit - netting T-shirt (70's style) and denim baggies. Netting t-shirt saved my bacon - anything else I would have ended up icu. Not a single tear in that shirt. Baggies also held.

They just don't make polyester like they used to.
