Which 29r Trail Bike?

Thanks for all the responses.

Loads of interesting ideas and bikes.

To answer a few questions/points I see being raised.

29r instead of 650b - I'm a fan of them, I am comfortable on them. I have had many 26r's and was happy on them too, but the move up in size suits me well. I have had the Pyga 650b demo for a weekend and enjoyed the bike a lot, but was happier to get back on the 29r. Nothing against them at all, just preference.

Enduro bike - I'm not interested in Enduro's, we ride large sections of the Karkloof and Giba enduro routes, but I do it for fun and not for time.

Riding type - I still have my marathon bike and will use it for long races (Hill2Hill, Stage races, K2C etc)

This new bike is for me going to be used as my regular weekend bike, so it doesn't have to be a racebike, just something that is fun to ride up or down. I know that some will be better climbers than others and vice versa some will go downhill better. I'm looking for a nice compromise, that can be good for 50km rides, and singletrack fun.

Anyone who is familiar with Karkloof/Howick area knows the type of trails we have here and what would work well.

I am starting to ponder the idea of building something up instead of a complete bike as there seem to be many great frames and then you can spec.

What are good options for Forks, Wheels, Cockpit?

140mm Pike is a winner. Although if the new Fox 36 is anything to go by the new 34 could also be a contender. Price on the Fox might be the biggest issue.

For wheels try get your self a hand built set of wheels that meet your needs. Something like Hope hubs and ZTR Arch EX rims or WTB i23/i25. This will set you back around 8k but there are cheaper options.

Cockpit is a personal preference thing. Bar and stem lengs and colours. It's up to you.

My post was in relation to the Evil and an owner of one saying he felt the bike (note, not only the HA) as a whole was too much of a pure trail bike for riding Karkloof.

All I'm saying is I think the Evil might be on the one extreme of the options here. The OP lives in KZN, I can't see him giving up all previous forms of riding in his quest for #Enduro dominance - pretty sure he'll still do the odd Berg n Bush, Sani etc and besides most of the good stuff at Karkloof requires a fair dose of climbing.

It's a flippen cool bike. I just feel, in my humble opinion, that there may be a better option particularly if it's a one bike scenerio.

And it's out of budget.

Back to the thread.

While I understand that this is the opinion of the owner of the, "the following", i just cant understand how he feels that way.

HA of 67.8 - 67.2 is firmly in the trail bike territory (65 - 67 being the norm for enduro these days, and 69 - 71 for XC rigs), plus the following is a 120mm bike, so its by no means a big travel bike either.

In my opinion... :)  it's the perfect bike for the more "gravity' trails in SA.

I think you should ask the evil owner again in a few months about the ride, might find his opinion will be different.

Not that any of this matters to the OP anyway as its out of budget, so just go with the 2016 stumpy 29er and be done with it!

Jip I was shocked and thought the guy was joking till I got told roughly the same price by 2 other companies.

Shop around.

When I requested a quote from Evil directly they quote me $550 for delivery.

Far from R14K

Even European bike shops charge somewhere between R5000-R6500 for shipping.

Either way it's why I never went further with it.

True that, but a supplier with a shipping contact will get big discounts versus joe blogs.

I agree with some of your points. But my question is do trails (Enduro) in SA have the same gradient as in Europe and the US? I don't think so. Our trails are way flatter so I would say that US and European Trail/Enduro bikes are over kill for our trails here and more suited to our DH tracks.

Oh and the rider of "the following" is a very accomplished rider and going over to the US to race in the EWS so I would value his opinion.

Lapierre Zesty TR429 would be my choice. 120mm Travel front and rear. XT and Race Face group set mix with KS dropper post R44000. PM if you would like to try the bike out..

Depends where you stay I suppose. In WC we have proper DH and Enduro stuff.

Kzn, not that I know of. Trail bike will be perfect for the Kzn trails I've ridden.

Suppose I have might have missed it, but is there an Ibis importer for SA?

The Ripley looks very sweet and I would like to investigate it a bit (pricing/spec/availability)

Based on US prices you're looking at +/- R45K for the frame if there is a local importer. That leaves very little for the build. It would cost quite a bit more if you bring it in yourself. ( I would never advise someone to import a carbon frame themselves...rather go for a brand with local backup.)

So I have decided to do a build.

Pyga One Ten Frame

New XT 2x11 Groupset

Rockshox Pike Solo Air 140

Hopefully will get it all together this week, then can post pics.

How much for that 110 frame and what comes with it ....headset, shock, seatpost, spares....?

I would go for the lapierre zesty...saw one at the giba enduro and looks like a super fun bike. Otherwise the SC tallboy lt...even if you have to get a 2nd hand frame and spec ot out like you want to.
