I dont understand this whole protein shake business, so please excuse me.

Is the principle, as I understand, that additional protein assists in the recovery process?  Why do these protein shakes then cost so much as opposed to the below which costs between R44 to R160.  I understand it tastes ***, but that cant be the reason other brands charge so much more?

WHat am i missing?

Soy is bad. Produces estrogen in your body. Whey is whey. As long and there is no soy in it its almost all the same. You can drink as much water or milk with it as you like. Those suggestions are simply for flavour. And please guys. Dont drink anything other than full cream milk. It's what milk is suppose to be. And its the healthiest too

Because they have to spend thousands on marketing to deceive the customer into thinking it works, and that they absolutely have to use it to increase their performance.

if you are going to use local protein, my advice is avoid USN and try -

Evox (great taste, mixes easy)

or

Evolve (great taste, no sweeteners/aspartame etc).

If you have the cash, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard

its cheap because its soy enough said

and soy protein doesn't aid recovery well for the same reason

if you are vegan there are better plant based protiens (ie pea ) that aren't soy

well im no expert but i know the major difference between Whey and Pea protein ( enduren uses pea protein ) is that whey is Milk based so lactose intolerant people normally cant use it.

Pea protein is fine for vegetarians and vegans and also has no gluten.

I used to buy from SupplimentsSA, they had very good pricing and sold unflavored supplements. What I then did was add a scoop of chocolate or strawberry Nesquick, that way I didn't get sick of one flavor (buying 5kg of one flavor can get tiring).

These are only 450g. USN comes in a 2kg bottle. Pricing then works out almost the same in the end

Chocolate Steri Stumpie. The creme soda and banana is too sweet. I stopped using it with water, as you said its too bland. I use the USN whey as as well.

Good point - are the serving sizings the same.  I understand the above is 2 tablespoons so about 30grams...  USN?

I used to blend raw oats and put them in my protein shakes. It was like drinking sand. Then I discovered I'm gluten intolerant and haven't eaten oats since.

I've never found protein shakes to taste bad, but there are definitely some brands that are better than others; I'd rank USN last. Texture and thickness I find usually has more to do with what you're buying than the brand (MRP, pure whey, isolates/mixes, etc.).

As for the cost, I suggest calculating the rand value per calorie and compare that with whole food. You're likely to find that you'll be hard-pressed to find a better value for money source of protein (chicken, eggs, fish, etc.). This isn't to say that it's not overpriced for what it is.

Also, ignore the serving suggestions and just get a kitchen scale and target macro numbers to supplement diet.
