Hello everybody, I'm new to the site and new to commuting.

I went to my LBS and they suggested a Giant Revel 03 29er as a good beginners commuting bike, what I'd like to know is any sugestions on something similar?

My average daily commute would be 40km.

Thanks

Hi Dan

Depends on the terrain and price, are you going to be cycling over rocks etc. Personally I would stay far away from a MTB because the shocks are heavy and MTB bicycles are generally heavy and not really made for riding on the road.

I would suggest looking at a hybrid or something like that, which would also be somewhat cheaper.

Keys to a good commuting bike: a back rack; good tyres that aren't knobbly; light frame.

Simpy and Allrounder thanx for the advice, the reason I'm looking at a mtb is that about 20km of my route is rocky dirt road and my riding style is hard, so I don't want to worry about getting punctures or bending a rim.

I've been searching for hybrids(cyclocross) but they are very hard to find.

I use a mountainbike for my commute. It allows me to go on pavements, sections through the spruit, and debris on the road or pavements doesn't cause flat tyres.

I bought a Titan Comp 29'er which I use for my daily commute. It has served me well so far.

But .. if you only have one bike, it's gotta be a mountain bike. Mountain bikes can go on tar, but roadie bikes aren't really that happy on dirt.
