Good Afternoon Everyone,

I would firstly like to congratulate everyone that participated on Sunday in East London. With the tough route, and weather that you were presented, I think that you all deserve a huge pat on the back.

It was High5’s first race as the official nutrition partner to IRONMAN South Africa, a partnership that will grow from strength to strength in the coming years. I hope that you all enjoyed the product out there as much as we all do.

As it was our first time being involved, I would like any feedback (positive or negative) that you may have regarding High5 on the course, to ensure that we continue to move in the right direction.

I will try to reply to as many as the comments here as possible, but please email me on garetht@asgworld.co.za with your feedback.

Kind Regards,

Gareth Taylor

High5 Brand Manager

Hey Gareth

Place some product in the race / goodie bag.

Also, station yourself away from the Coke vendors, as Coke will always top any other "refreshment", especially for runners!

A competition or "rewarded" survey won't be a bad idea.

Enjoyed the product.

Hi Gareth

I took a number of gels on the bike. I am not a regular H5 user. I found them easy to tear, suck and discard within the confines of the waterpoint. The liquid consistency made them very easy to consume. Have no idea what flavours I consumed but in the heat of battle they were all pleasant.

What is the RRP? The prices I have seen in stores made them significantly more expensive than competing products.

Please advise the number of calories per gel. What are the other components?

Hi Alwin Deale,

Thanks for the great ideas.

Once again, due to our tight timelines for the first event we were not able to get product into your bags, but this is something we are looking into.

IRONMAN is very strict in the way which they stock their water tables. With all of their experience, they have found that the order in which the products are available at each water point works best for athletes. I will definitely bear this in mind at other events which we are involved in, thank you!

I have a few samples of products that have just been launched in the UK, which are not currently available in South Africa, so I am going to be running a competition soon, so keep an eye on our Facebook page.

Kind Regards,

Gareth

Hi davem,

It’s great to hear that they worked well for you. High5 have been around in the UK for close to 20 years, so they have had a lot of experience in what works best in a gel. I guess that is why they are the number one brand over there.

The flavours you had on course in EnergyGel were Citrus and Raspberry Plus (containing caffeine), there was also IsoGel Orange available at the second water point on the bike.

Currently RRP for our gels is R22.50. Unfortunately due to our exchange rate falling through the floor we have had to have a price increase this month, so RRP will be increased to R26.50 over the next few weeks. Keep an eye out in your IRONMAN newsletter on how to save on High5.

The amount of calories vary slightly between flavours, but most EnergyGel’s contain 91kcal per serving, and IsoGel is around 95kcal. Main components of them are Glucose, Maltodextrin, Fruit Juice, and Sea salt. If you are looking for something in particular, all of the nutritional info is available on our website (www.high5online.co.za).

Kind Regards,

Gareth

Would that be ASG or High 5 facebook page?

Hi ScottC-M

That would be our High5 Sports Nutrition – South Africa page.

  • Expo/Merchandise was disappointing/overpriced. Do not understand the business model of this. eg. Gu were selling there gels at R27.95 which you can buy at full retail price for R23.95 from Dischem. I use a lot and would buy a whole box, maybe even two if the price was tempting. As it looked like this was GU themselves not a retailer, they are also making the full retail margin. Their business I guess but a lost opportunity..

I ran out of Roctane powder week before and decided to get a tub at Expo. Joke.... paid about 20% more than usual.

Hi Gareth,

I liked the gels (hydrogels I believe the type is called?). First time I used the type and it is much easier to consume than normal ones.

I have two promotional suggestions:

1. Products at actual promotional Expo prices and not RRP + 20%-30% as most seem to do it

2. A recovery drink at the end should you have one in your range.

+1 for products at promotional prices at the Expo. I planned on buying at the Expo as I thought it would be cheaper seeing as High5 was the race sponsor only to find out it was more expensive!

They did have a recovery protein drink at the end, it was where you collected your food packs.

Did the race bags shrink?

They are quite a nice design/colour scheme but really are the size you give to your kid to take to primary school. Not useful at all.

I really like the gym towel. Going to get lots of use out of that.

Hi Snytjie,

Awesome to hear that you enjoyed them. I think you might be referring to the IsoGel (blue sachet), which is almost as viscous as a sports drink.

Unfortunately at East London we were a bit more expensive (as were all of the other exhibitors), but this is the nature of the East London expo. I am sure that you will find our pricing a lot more appealing at the remaining expos this year.

We did have Protein Recovery available in the Final Aid station tent, unfortunately many athletes became a bit distracted by the beer and massage tents on their way to Final Aid. We will always be there, so keep an eye out for us at the next one.

Kind Regards,

Gareth

Hi MAVERICK 13,

As I mentioned to Snytjie above, prices will be down at the rest of the expos this year, so I am sure you will be stocking up next time you see us.

Hope that you enjoyed the Protein Recovery.

+1000

Both the EL and Durban race bags are of no use ... dumped in a corner which is a pity as if they were of a useful size it becomes free marketing and advertising as people will use them

I always thought this would be my last race in EL. Five is enough....but...

It is a very honest course. You do the training you get the time. No free ride in EL.

Still believe I have a PB in me...maybe just one more
