My expectations for Oceans are now very low - hoping to complete in cut-off that's all. As for Comrades - at this point I think it will be a step too far for me this year, but I will leave a small chance open depending how Oceans goes... My marathon qualifier was a real eye-opener. I am hoping it was just a bad day as I felt crap from the start, but flip the distance got to me. Can't get my head around double that and then some I'm in a similar boat... can't see myself even being ready for a qualifier at this stage - might just start training for next year and build up a good base - I clearly left it too late with my start and the legs just aren't coping. But lets see, you just never know

I developed slight pain in my left knee and the physio informed me that my hamstrings are too short, and this is causing extra friction where the tendon moves across the knee at the end of my stride. Now I am stretching several times a day to lengthen them but it seems like this will take several weeks to sort itself out. Any suggestions from all you pro's out there?

I had the same problem after Comrades this year, and Mike got me sorted and back on the roads within a few weeks I came across SBR while searching for help online, the only problem is that they are quite far from where I stay in Pretoria, but If they really are that good I might make a day out of it. However I am pretty sure it is not an ITB issue, although it could be aggravating the problem. The pain is definitely lower down where the hamstrings attach and not the ITB. At least I've got something to look forward to regardless of how the next few weeks go I am sheeting myself every now and again about this. Something to the tune of 1900m asc over 22k's... just sounds like a lot of walking and/or mountaineering at places for me! But I suspect it's going to be awesome! ricochet_rabbit Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I'm struggling... small calf tear that won't go away. Two weeks good training, followed by now almost two weeks of no training. Super frustrating... doing lots of Bio work, and my legs felt pretty good when running (which is unusual almost), but not getting around this bloody niggle. Time rapidly running out PS: Don't play touch rugby league! 5 good years of fun, but my calves have never been the same again! if it's a small calf tear (grade 1) then you should be able to get on the bike, particularly the IDT / Spinning bike. Do a 60 min tempo session (seated) and you'll maintain a large degree of fitness.

Hoping I can do a bit of riding and "rest it". Bio work will also hopefully start to kick in. I know they look a bit questionable, but I'm considering running in compression socks? My physio reckons it will help a bit. Thoughts?

Good Call in my Opinion I have run all my Comrades in them as I have had quite a few Calf Issues Compression Socks definitely hold it all together and stop the Cramping etc Not sure ill use them this year cos most of my niggles are behind me... touch wood.... My physio reckons it will help a bit. Thoughts? can't comment on the compression socks as I've never used them. Get in a few physio sessions and do the strengthening exercises. Plenty of time still to train for a qualifier and comrades so don't rush back, If you aggravate it to a grade 2 it could be months instead of weeks. When you do come back start small and increase the milage slowly, maybe only running every second day and run only flat routes for the first couple weeks.Got the T-shirt(s). Andrew Steer 1
