ScottCM Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 And here I am surrounded by people who want to improve their marathon times - jeez, I just want to get to the finish of one! You and me both. Heal up soon
ricochet_rabbit Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Random questions: would I finish Comrades on Ironman training? i'm sure you could ...there is only so much hurt involved with comrades and everyone hurts from 60k onwards.... you can choose to either do some in training and some on the day or you can choose to do most of it on the day.....your call.
ScottCM Posted November 2, 2015 Author Posted November 2, 2015 Hey Jigghead, How did the Marathon go? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17c3Re7dGpkbBvFENrfn-hsTUxvdvxaYeoDArGQW1NIQ/edit#gid=602379615
Mokgaga'a mmakubela! Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I would like to run comrades next year but I cant run or cycle until Jan 2016 - was involved in a bicycle accident about 3 weeks back. so would it be too late to start training for comrades from Jan 2016?

I think so, most people only start their serious training from January onwards. Take it easy now and recover. Don't start training too early, you will just prolong the healing process. Good Luck!
Jigghead Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 (edited) Hey Jigghead, How did the Marathon go? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17c3Re7dGpkbBvFENrfn-hsTUxvdvxaYeoDArGQW1NIQ/edit#gid=602379615 OK, so this was a very poorly organised event. We were scheduled to begin at 06h15 and only got going around 06h25. No biggie. But I couldn't understand why they sent the 10km runners off, then the 21km runners and then after all that, the 42.2km guys? The race started well, although it was hot (24.5 deg at 6am). The pace was easy and I was on track to achieve my goal going up to 30km mark. I'd managed my nutrition and pace in anticipation of the last 10-12km uphill push home. Then, water points ran dry, no coke, no water sachets for the last 12 or so km's. My temperature monitor hit a high of 42deg during the race, even with a 5deg margin of error, we're looking at 37deg. Cramp started to threaten at around 35km's and so it was run/walk for the balance of the race. Official time was 5h34, although for qualification purposes they send Comrades mat to mat time which in my case was 5h24. Either way, I'm in for another qualification run. I think this time it's gonna need to be an event that doesn't carry a rating of 4 in terms of difficulty. I've been told that the Akasia 3-in-1 is rated at 2, and being at the end of Jan, I think that will be my next attempt. Quite possibly a little more of a scientific approach to my training may also be in order. I'll keep you posted. in the interim, have a look at Strava for more info on my morning of pain and suffering, have a look at that route profile as well... EDIT: Can't find entry details for either Johnson Crane Hire or Akasia. Anyone have a URL for me? Edited November 2, 2015 by Jigghead

Anyone have a URL for me?Congrats on your Run, Sorry it didn't go quite to plan, yesterday was a scorcher, I had finished my short morning run and was on a Golf Course at 9am, and I was feeling very sorry for the Guys still out there at Soweto. I also Cant seem to find 2015 dates for the Johnson Crane, on entry time, runners guide or the Benoni Northerns website,. Very strange, but I do think the race will be on the 24th January... and I'm sure entrytime.com will have it up soon. If you looking for a flat easy qualifiers then either JC, Sasolburg or even Vaal are the ones in Gauteng. Vaal is usually only early March so you might want to do one of the earlier ones and get the qualifier in before March just In case of illness etc.. Jigghead 1

Stretch Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I dont understand how events can't get their water and coke sorted out. For starters you can return coke...so order more than you need and if a table i running out have a roving vehicle that can replenish.....plus you know how many people you had last year...and how much water was required...plan!! plan a holiday to the seaside in Feb @Jigg...Hillcrest marathon is a really well organised..it can be hot...but its in leafy hillcrest suburb. A down up down up two lap course https://www.strava.com/activities/252059341
Ferret69 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 When i phoned the organiser a few weeks ago he stated the 31st for Johnson Crane 31st it is then, Thanks ScottC
Vinnydabutcher Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Yesterday was crazy hot - we did a long run through Pta - came back over Klapperkop and it was HOT and that was only 08:00! Good work to hang in there Jigg, will be there on the next one - either Johnson`s or Akasia. You boys ready for Though One?

If you read the little booklet that came with our race packs, it states that Coke sponsors the cool drink as a means to ensure that competitor's products are not sold or marketed and ASA/CGA events. The only prerequisite is that unused stock is returned. Not sure who arranges the water. I think the issue is that a lot of the local children seem to be running around with water sachets along the route. It also appears as if a lot of of the water points are manned by "unofficial" officials. Having said this though, blames should rest squarely on the shoulders of organisers for not providing sufficient controls. With yesterday's heat, it's just plain dangerous!

Andrew Steer Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 So probably time to start training then... Stretch 1

I heard last years event the first two water tables didnt even go up...everyone just grabbed the coke and water and buggered off...runners ran past empty tables
Andrew Steer Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Races for me... PnP Half, maybe full if I start actually training now, Dischem Half, Cradle Half, Colgate 32km, Johnsons Crane Marathon, Vaal Marathon and either Om die Dam or Two Oceans. And the last big test, RAC 60km training run - usually a month before Comrades - perfect last little test, long, slow, hilly, painful ScottCM 1
