So as suspected, rest is the order of the day, will go back on Monday for next appointment.

How is everyone's training going?

Almost taper time for you isn't it stretch?

no taper yet - will take a few days off before the run and take an easy 20 on the weekend before.

my advice - go see a bio and get an exercise regime to strengthen those crucial areas.

I changed over from Acics GT2.... and Kayano to a very minimalist shoes about 2 1/2 years ago. It was the only way for me to sort out very long standing (>10yrs) achilles issues. Counterintuitively moving onto the forefoot was great.

I still do very long runs (>30k) in 'normal' shoes, so train in those about 1x/wk

returned my gt2000's that i had 2 runs in today and got a store credit - I had a quick look around and initial thoughts are along the lines of (subject to trying them on and testing)

brooks launch

puma speed 300

asics ? (cant remember the name -  but they were blerry expensive too)

Sorry for the ignorance here, what how does this work?

does one go to the physio to get injury diagnosis and then to bio for treatment and strengthening program?

I am really uneducated in this department. i've never even been in a gym before so i dont no much.

When I had my injury - I went to my physio first for some massage and then she recommended I go see a bio. He assessed my mechanics and identified where I was weak by doing some standard tests. Based upon that he gave me exercises to do twice a day. I think I saw him 5 times in total and every time he assessed me based upon the same tests to see how I was improving and modified the daily exercises according. The other big plus was that he gave me facia release treatment (which ferret alluded to earlier). He was not ridiculously expensive (R400 for first consult and R340 there after)...but Jhb might be more expensive. I still go back once or twice a year to test and assess where I am at or if I certain areas need strengthening. You got to do the exercises though...and you can keep running by doing track (grass) sessions.

I highly recommend it - knee injuries are largely related to poor form and while physio work can ease pain - it cant really prevent it. strengthening your glutes and quads will improve your form and hopefully prevent injuries

It feels like something has changed with Asics over the last couple of years. I can't put my finger on it; but its not the same anymore. I used to only use Asics (for the last 20+ years), but lately they just don't seem to work. I know they changed the drop, so that might be it.

This is the feedback I get from all our local stores, all their asics clients complain with each new addition coming out.

Myself and my wife had one pair each two years back and never again thanks...

Heard good feedback about them, I might get a pair as well.   This dude seems to be very impressed as well...

"I’ve also decided to put another brand of shoe to the test, in June I started testing the Brooks Launch and more recently the Glycerin 14. What a pleasure, the Launch may just be the shoe to consider for the up-run and fits the mold of “racer-trainer” perfectly. The Glycerin will more than likely be my “trainer”, built to absorb the bulk of the weekly training runs, offering great support and cushioning in the process. I can’t wait to try out the Hyperion, a pure “racing” shoe, ideal for Parkruns, time trials, speedwork and races up to 21km."

I am obviously nowhere near Shaun Meiklejohn's league, but his running style (see foot strike in photo) is the exact opposite of what I am currently going for.

my guess is that picture is an anomaly...you dont run a 6:45 at 50+ with incorrect form

I agree, I have only used Asics and I can feel a difference from my first pair in 2014 to now. Not sure what exactly has changed. I am considering trying a different brand. Asics costs R1800 after your 25% Vitality discount.

You simply cannot judge "form" from a single picture, or run a comparison between 2 pictures; there are just too many variables to consider.

A single person would have a infinite number of variations to their "form" as distance/speed/terrain/age/etc. changes.

I might be looking at this the wrong way, but the price of shoes have never bothered me that much.   It is one of the areas that I'm not going to skimp and then down the line it gives you issues or one day you sit with buggered knees or whatever.

It is not as if I buy a new pair every 3 months.   I'll rather save money in other areas, this is after all the main and almost only piece of equipment you need for running...

its interesting. I think we pay far too much attention on shoes. Part of the reason why I want to get away from the support blah blah fishpaste side of things. I was chatting to a well known coach the other day and he was saying that you could get a 3 pairs of 700 buck shoes and its exactly the same as 1 pair of high end shoe...maybe a little bit heavier....but if it is promoting or assisting in natural running style then it makes no difference....and promoting natural style will naturally keep injuries away...or thats what the theory is anyway

David Gatebe will agree, in fact the R700 would be overspending in his case!
