I went passed about 8:45, paramedics had left but about 4 cop cars still there, I would guess it happened in daylight.

The motorbike could also have crossed from the M3 into the on ramp as that stretch becomes a triple carriage way and is also the off ramp to get to Tokai.

We will never know but 2 families lives have changed forever.

between 7 and 745. Saw it too, emt's were still trying to revive the motorcyclist. Looked to me the bicycle may have become entangled in the motor bike.. as if the motorbike flipped possibly. TRaffic was backlogged with the closure, what else was I going to look at.. I'd go with cyclist moving across the onramp from M3. So sad

The dotted route is the one I'm referring to.

fair enough, thought you meant the bridge at the keysers river. In practicality, i don't see many guys taking this option, especially not if he's going to take the M3 anyway - the oke is commuting to work, not training - so the mindset will be to follow the path of least resistance; safety is not the #1 priority. Not saying it's right/legal, but I see the reason for taking that route.

I've driven this freeway twice a day for the last 10 years.

Passed the scene this morning with a kuk feeling in my gut when I saw the bike and m/bike.

In recent years I've seen more and more bicycle commuters using the freeway in both directions. I've also spotted the odd recreation cyclist doing the same.

It's a no-brainer to ride, the shoulder is wide, you can stay way off to the side out of harm's way. The on/offramps are the problem. And that fact that it is illegal.

I hope that the traffic officials start to police the commuters, otherwise it's going to happen again.

Horrible and sad, but inevitable.

While back had my own early morning commuter prang.

Cycling to town down the Lower Main Rd and approached the bridge just before you get to the Good Hope Centre. Noticed the robot was an old green so picked up the pace. Robot then changed and I sprinted to make the light. Got over well enough and then dropped my head momentarily to kinda recover. Looked up again and T-boned a motorbike.

He came out of the little side road, probably looked right; probably stared straight into the rising sun; probably looked for vehicle outlines; probably saw non and proceeded into the road. Voila.

Both of us went sprawling. I came off rather light and suffered only a bent fork. Motorcyclist was ok after he dusted himself off. Police had a laugh and thought a cycling knocking over a motor bike was funny. Long story short - he promised to pay and never did.

Guys, when cycling in the moring or evening when the rising or setting sun effect need to be factored in, be ultra careful.

RIP fellow two wheelers.

Cape Town - The cyclist who was killed in a collision with a motorbike on the M3 was not supposed to have been using the freeway.

According to the City of Cape Town, cyclists are barred from using this section of the road.

Motorists have complained that it is not the first time they have spotted cyclists making use of the road and are calling for a crackdown on errant cyclists on freeways, including the M5.

Police said the collision took place on Thursday at about 7.30am.

Spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said it is alleged that the motorbike rider was travelling towards Wynberg on the M3 when the cyclist attempted to cross the highway from the inside lane.

The motorcyclist swerved to avoid the cyclist, but it was too late and the pair collided.

Paramedics found both riders lying on the grass embankment, which borders the busy road. The cyclist had already succumbed to his injuries.

Metro EMS members worked to resuscitate the motorbike rider who was lying a few metres away. However, after 20 minutes it was clear he was not going to make it.

Motorists who passed by the site of the crash saw two bodies covered in sheets and the wrecked remains of their bikes lying in the grass.

According to city traffic services spokesman Richard Coleman, the cyclist was aged about 35 while the motorcyclist was in his 50s.

Mayoral committee member for Transport Brett Herron told the Cape Argus that the M3 is a freeway from Wynberg Hill to Steenberg Road, the section where the crash took place. It’s signposted along the road.

“Cyclists are not allowed to cycle on freeways as it is regarded to be extremely unsafe due to the speeds at which vehicles travel on these roads.”

Pedal Power Association chairman Steve Hayward said there had been numerous complaints about cyclists using the M3 and M5.

As a rule, the association recommended riders avoided freeways.

Hayward also pointed out that laws clearly stated that cyclists were prohibited from using freeways.

“There is always the possibility that motorists will take chances and drive on the shoulder if the road is busy. If you are a cyclists making use of that part of the road, you have no protection.”

He said this year had been a “rough” year for cyclists despite the association “surging forward with its safer cycling campaign”.

“More and more cyclists are involved in accidents and we are going to have to up our game getting motorists and cyclists to share the roads.”
