My thinking was that if tech has moved along as people always mention would that much newer Ultegra be much better than the old DA?

The old DA ...

The derailleurs stay pretty much the same... the tech changes happen in the shifter.

It is why I've never understood why they will put an XT rd on a cheaper model but still use deore shifters. Should be the other way around!

Ultegra.

It is a good few years "newer", so with trickle down technology, it will be better than the DA, especialy if you have the newer model shifters.

the challenge is that is the DA derailleur is an old 8 speed unit it might be challenged to work effectively at both extremes of the cassette. A 9 speed derailleur with a slightly longer parallelogram would cope better no matter the name tier in Shimano's offering.

That was my thinking originally ..... anyway I will give it a go I can always go back if I want to.

the look of the RD leads me to believe that the DA is a few series behind the Ultegra, in which case I would go with the Ultegra. Are they even both the same speed derailluers?

Maybe dome model numbers (if you can find) will help as well.
