Like begeara says; if it doesn't stiffen up or bind, you're fine, but stem above steerer isn't cool.

Right, got ja. Will adjust the stem so im cool again..lol

Still on the headset, i notice the compression ring doesn't sit flush and sticks out quite a bit. This means the cover cant clip onto the top cup and leaves a gap as per pics.

As far as i can see, the compression ring is as far down as it can go. Is this fine?

What you have there is bad. You want about the same gap you got there, but with a spacer.

The stem should't ever stick out above the steerer tube.

SLAM THAT STEM!!!

HUH?

As long as the steerer is above the top stem bolt you're golden.

If hecan maintain the gap that he's got there, but instead achieve it with a spacer(ie. stem slammed, spacer on top) he only has to use a 5mm spacer.

If that makes sense(!?)

So disregard all that dollars spent on a bike fit, sacrifice comfort because www.slamthatstem.com

From the pics it look like there are two compression rings in there...

Thats what i thought so I took it out and its a weird single ring but a large one. I honestly think its the wrong ring that came with it.

Are you using the nukeproof cup? If it's still an fsa/giant cup the bearing and the rest of the top cap assembly might not sit flush like with the nukeproof cup.

You might find that the butterfly clamp inside the tube is not gripping, if I'm right you'll find it makes a click sound as it makes impact after the front wheel is lifted off the ground. You need to knock the clamp deeper into the tube and tighten it again.

I assume what you mean to say is that the steerer tube should never be flush with the top of the stem?

It's quite acceptable that the steerer tube sticks out above the top of the stem, as long as one then uses the appropriate sized spacer to give the headset top-cap enough space for preload.

"SLAM THAT STEM"... a stupid fad.

Yeah nah....

Using the stem to create the tension space is absolutely fine and common practice, provided the top stem bolt is not above the top of the steerer.

It's ok, but don't defend bad advice.

Just say 'eish, I always thought it was bad practice. My bad' and move on

So first ride in with new headset and fork and notice play in the headset. Tightened up and all good but then came loose again today while riding around.

Notice there is a spacer under the topcap amd the stem is flush with the top of the steerer tube so perhaps itbwasnt preloading properly. Shuffle things around, with all spacers at the bottom of stem and now a good few millimetres gap to pre-load properly (as per pic).

I have to tighten the top bolt (after loosing stem bolts) rather tight to stop the play but the odd part is that the steering doesn't lock up at all. With my old setup, it would lock if the bolt was too tight. Seems wrong or is there a bed in period for headsets?

Did you clean your new fork before installing the stem?

So you're saying it's ok to have stem stick out above the steerer tube?
