devocean Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Last Thursday I came off my bike, fracturing three ribs and puncturing a lung. I spent the weekend with a tube in my side, draining the air while the lung repaired itself. Yesterday (Sunday) I got the tube removed and xrays showing everying is good. I'm not in much pain at all, besides the rib muscle that the drainage tube was forced through. I'm walking around ok, and back at work and not on any meds. The ribs don't hurt much, just feel like i have a bit of a knot in my back. How long should I completely stay off the bike for and when would it be ok to start riding on an indoor trainer?
V12man Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 10 days or so and you should be ok - depending on what the ribs feel like. Do yourself a favor - take it easy in the beginning - coughing with broken ribs and adhesions in the lung will NOT be good. I know this for a fact - both professionally and personally - although I have never tried the combination. Heal up soon.
NicoBoshoff Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Maybe ask, oh, I don't know, your treating physician? Seriously though, I don't think the Hub is a place for obtaining medically important advice. Edit: Spelling
ChUkKy Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 Inhale a bottle of Stans and you'll be good to go
devocean Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 What did the quack say???? He seemed like he wasn't sure what to tell me. He started off saying two weeks, then rambled a bit and it became 3 weeks, then rambled a bit more and said a month. I'm not sure if he meant that i can only do high intensity after a month, or just ride a bike after a month. I thought it might be helpful hearing other people's experiences. From what I can gather from other forums, V12man is a doc

If it were me I would take it very easy for the first few weeks but I'm definitely no Doc!

It just so happens that the comment above yours was from a surgeon. But yeah, I agree, besides V12man and maybe a couple of others, hubbers are only self proclaimed medical experts. I myself have about 11yrs experience in the medical field. Ever since Season 1 of House. I'm pretty sure it's not Lupus!
Gravity Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 hey devocean - glad you are feeling better. i actually had a fall on Thursday morning aswell and fractured 1 rib.you must be a boer seun coz im in lots of pain still. i recon you must rather bite the bullet and take it easy - maybe go to gym and use the bikes sitting more straight up or rather go for mellow walks in the forest etc just to get out the house - for another week or 2.imagine what you could do to yourself if you go for a ride (even an easy one) and someone turns in front of you again.....as i see it you are internally compromised already.....why risk a much worse injury.
devocean Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Everyone says 'take it easy' but what does that mean? I'm trying to work out how soon I can safely start doing an easy ride on an indoor trainer
Gravity Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 same time you can take a **** without pain?

Last thing you want is coming off again with damaged ribs and lung...might not be so lucky this time around. Hope you recover soon!
Oufy MTB (Roadie) Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 I crashed and my rib was sore, x-rays showed nothing but for almost a month I had this pain, since there was nothing visible wrong I started riding after a week but will still eina. Now this is nothing compared to what OP experience. I say do nothing for 2 weeks as a start and see how you feel.
mazambaan Posted September 14, 2015 Posted September 14, 2015 You are tough - mine was a few weeks before I thought about getting on a bike but I did have a broken collarbone as well as my excuse. But I was very pap at first although brutal physio (nice girl) and brutal biokineticist (also nice girl) but they were hard man; got me going. But as V12 says, take it easy, particularly starting off. Injured at end of Feb and was "fine" by May (sani), just a bit delicate (and good excuse).

I actually carried on cycling to work after the accident thinking i was just badly winded. When I got to work I walked into a meeting i was late for and couldn't find the breath to explain what happened. Out of this whole experience, I'll tell you, the insertion of that chest drain is the most painful thing i've ever been through (even having a catheter inserted while awake was a walk in the park compared to this) and if I had to do it again, I'd to try to get it done under general anaesthetic or some kind of sedation and not just a local anaesthetic
