Years ago I used to ride only in black and white because it is stylish! (I once got stopped opposite Boulders in Simonstown by the "penguin man", to be informed that I look just like one of his birds! ) Now I own riding shirts in several scorch your eyeballs colours because I figured out that being alive is more important. I find that solid colours in bright yellow / green or hunters orange works the best. Club kit with multiple colours, patterns and logos, even in bright colours, do not work nearly as well because it camouflage your shape. Next time you are out riding, look around and see what is the most visible.

BTW That orange Molteni shirt in your avatar was the inspiration for our team a few years ago. It is visible in the extreme.

Get your self one of these Serfas Thunderbolt, USB rechargeable and extremely bright. Otherwise if cost is an issue Ryder does a similar thing but our out of stock at the moment.

Knog also do some really bright USB LED lights.

Probably around R450 by now but have 4 modes and if someone hits you with one of these they were aiming for you.

The Ryder "Rebar" ones are about R300 and do the same thing.

Shot Spoke101 will have a look around when I get back from my current contract!

I ride with led flashers front and rear, road and mtb. Every ride.

Been hit before, will do all possible to be seen. Modern lights are compact and have no mass to weigh you down.

Dont go near the Knog lights, the straps break within a month, although as lights they are up at the top.

Where's the best place to get hold of these? With winter coming I'm in need on a nice bright tail light.

Not sure as the distributors have changed. Ryder make a similar thing for half the price called the Rebar. Every shop should be able to get them.

Sportsmans Warehouse used to stock a few Serfas lights.

I have a Thunderbolt and a Knog - the Thunderbolt has been going for about 2 years - always on when I ride. The Knog strap broke within 2 weeks - nice light though.....

I saw a post in the Commuter thread where an oke put an amber lens on his front white light and mounted it, facing rearwards, on his seat post. He claims a step-change in how cars have treated him. Maybe suggests the ideal would be a splitter cable to run a battery-powered front white light and a red lens covered white light, pointing rear. Judicious use of flash mode and mid-power settings should still give good battery life?

Front light facing rear would definitely give you visibility that no normal rear light does but the thought of running more cables on my bike makes me shudder (yes I realise I'm choosing aesthetics over safety).

Will have a look at sportsmans and others for the brights rear light I can find. I notice when driving that as long as a cyclist has a bright one I can generally see them pretty well. Helmet light also helps

I also ride with a Serfas raider (https://www.serfas.com/products/view/144/referer:products%7Cindex%7Clights%7Cusb-lights%7Cpage:2), which I got at SWH for R200. Great recharge life and far brighter than it looks capable of providing.

A raider and a Thunderbolt on the rear - both on full strobe - and my mate complains of riding behind me!

Same with me....he tends to lead more and let me slipstream more! And I switch it off if it looks like he's going to have an epileptic fit!
