To go 1 x10 or not to go 1 x 10

Tnx Myles, if you say 104 bcd, how can I measure that or is it supposed to stand on the crank. Do you measure across or the holes next to each other?

It's the bolt circle diameter. So essentially the distance, in mm, between the centres of 2 mounting holes diagonally opposite each other on the crank. But that's a shimano crank by the looks of things, and a deore / alivio one at that, which means it's a bog standard 104mm BCD ring that you need.

That is correct, it is a Shimano Deore crank. Ok that's the way I understood it as well because that's the same method one uses to measure a car rim's bcd as well.

So i went 1 X 10 on a new build - 10 spd 11 - 36 converted to 11 - 42 with the 16 filler. I'm using a X9 RD long cage, running a 34 NW oval on the front. All from KALBO.

So here's the problem - It changes up perfect all the way to the 42, but when I try drop off the 42 the RD doesn't pull the chain off the 42 onto the 36. The top jockey pulley just runs up against the 42

I've replaced the B screw for a longer one which is in at the max.

The chain ring is mounted in the same position as the middle ring on the front with 2mm spacers moving it closer to the frame, this to improve the chainline a bit -

Anyone else experienced this or have a remedy ?

Would the spacers be contributing ?

Is your RD the clutch type, or not?

I had the same issue with my X0 non clutch derailer. Swopped it for a clutch type derailer, problem solved.

edit:

Bit of a long read, but should answer most of your questions.

Had the same issue on my XTR RD with a clutch.

Problem ended up being a chain that was to short. I tried reusing my 2x10 chain but needed a one more link as the RD cage was overextended and not releasing properly.

Hi all,

I while back saw someone advertising a Praxis 10sp cassette. Any idea who distributes them in JHB? My 11-36 is tired...

Thanks

I went 1 x 10 on my Trance with a Praxis 11-42 and Kalbo 32t Oval upfront. I ride the same places as you Maximus and this works like a bomb. Its also the Cheapest way to do it.

Hi Mawbs, if I may ask, what was the price on your conversion, Kalbo 32T oval and Praxis 11-42 and bought from who? My 41st bday is coming up and looking for a "from dad to dad" present [emoji320] [emoji102] Cheers Bennie

Untill Mawbs answers, I phoned around for some prices. Them Praxis cassettes will put you back R1900-R2100, the Kalbo oval is about R550 as well as 70 odd bucks for shipping.

The whole Kalbo conversion will be the cheapest and will set you back about R1550 (11/42 with 34t incl 16t filler). Sommer a DIY jobbie....

Another thing to concider will be the Sunrace wide range cassette if you want to go purpose built. The reason I personally would go for the Sunrace over the Praxis is because of its ratios...the Sunrace jumps from 36 to 40(42) where the Praxis jumps 34 to 40(42). I still want my 36. Sunrace will only be available next month I think, no stock in the country.

Try and support the local guys and get Kalbo setup, no matter what its still the cheapest option and the quality looks super-duper....also Colin is a nice guy en hy sal nie k@k aan jou verkoop nie.

Tnx DoubleJ for the info, that is what I like about bikehub[emoji106]

No the Sunrace is purpose built, meaning that its a cassette you buy thats specifically made for that purpose. Its as easy as taking off your old cassette slap on the Sunrace/Praxis and set your B-tension screw for the rear deraileur so that the chain can climb up and down from the dinner plate at the back.

Have a look at the Kalbo website...its loaded with info - http://www.kalbo.co.za

I forgot to say that the Sunrace you can get for about R1200, although pricing might change with the new stock coming in. Still waaaaay cheaper than a Praxis.

My cassette is still fairly new, running 3x10, think for a start I might go oval 32T and then get the cassette when mine is due for a replacement. Or will my 11-36 kill me on a 32T oval?

Depens on how much you climb, you could end up with legs of steel. You could just get the 32t oval from Kalbo and also get their 40 or 42 Hill-kill expander sprocket with the 16t gap filler. Its suppose to be used with a new cassette.

oops sorry i meant Sunrace 11-42 ..cost me R1625 with new chain and 2 extra quick links

then Kalbo 32t Oval  was R549.00 + R49 for spacers so total was just over R 2200

The Kalbo conversion kit is also fine but only if you have a casette that can split and secondly isnt worn out.

I went the Sunrace route as my drivetrain already had over 5000km on it so went all new

Hi guys, need some advice.

Im currently running a 1x10 set up, up front I have a 36t 104bcd kitted chain ring on a normal shimano crank. What I would like to know is, do I need the spacers in front?

I can hear the chain taking strain when Im on my one up. I've tried 2mm washers as spacers but when installed the chain ring rubs against my frame.
