do you ride in the door zone?

I'm constantly amazed how often I see people ride at speed in the door zone of parked cars - experienced riders too. Having seen up close what being doored at just 20kph can do, I never want to see the damage at 40kph or more. But ... it's hard to face the pressure of holding up the traffic to keep a safe distance...

I haven't found this discussed here -  what's your thoughts?

Yes and no. I try stay clear from cars in general. But when faced with the question, especially in town, whether I ride in the door zone or the "taxi driving at 80+km/h" zone I tend to choose the door zone.

I'm not one that can keep an average of 60km/h on an uphill...

yeah the "door zone" is better than the zone under a truck

you need to be aware of vehicles that contain people as apposed to empty vehicles

tinted windows don't help

I do slow down a bit when there are lots of parked cars one after another and get a finger on that brake lever just in case :whistling:

If I have no choice, I'd rather ride in the door zone than in the traffic zone, at least I have a measure of control over the situation.  Cover the brakes, look through the windows and watch for front wheels turning. And, if you're a certain mate of mine - Don't swivel your head to check out the babes in Camps Bay or you'll end up through the back window of an A4 station wagon...

Notafaq, get doored and then beaten to death with a handbag?

Every time I have had a near door experience you get looked at like a common criminal. Innocent car passenger exits car, not a care in the world, only to be mowed down by ruthless cyclist. Well that's how it looks to them, never mind your roasties, bruises, wrecked hip, stumbling around in agony.
