Whats the difference between running it up or down?

More chain wrap if you run it upwards, so theoretically less chance of the chain coming off

Last time i spoke with Kiwi he mentioned that the stock ones don't run inverted but that one of his other customers managed to get a reverse spring. I haven't looked at mine in detail yet, I was wondering if just changing the spring over was possible or not.

No idea - I have sliding dropouts now...

So.... picking this up today

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/158888-scott-usa-expert-provisionally-sold/

Looks like a good starting point, all that id need is the ss kit, crankset and chain ring and brakes

Brakes i may also have by today,

This wil by far be the cheapest way seeing as the parts i have missing are all on this bike at a very good price

later stage will be a nice rigid fork upgrade etc.

Onto the next question

What is the preferable ratio to start off with? i was thinking 34/16 would be a decent middle of the line ratio

I'd advise starting at 32/16.

For R1500 that is a deal! And great way to start building a SS.

Exactly why i jumped at it

I suppose this gear is the easier one,

good for single track and short climbs?

Pretty standard gearing for a 26" wheel bike. Good place to start for overall MTBing. Can move to a 18 if you need things easier or a 33 or 34 if you spinning out. Trick is to gear for climbs - here in KZN anyway...

Great find, and great price.

as for the Ratio. on 26, I ran a 34 16 to start, and TBH it was quite difficult.

was ok on the flats, but going uphill was challenging at times.

rather start slightly bigger, and you can always change along the way.
