Check if you rd can handle the 34. I doubt it.... For a 32 you need a rd with a longer "arm". I havent seen options for bigger sprockets though...

Correct, while the current Sora RD has a capacity of 33t it will not handle a 34t cassette. I added an Acera Mega-range RD to my 34t cassette order so the rear is covered.

Seems eBay is the only source for 130BCD 48t chainrings, will get one of those and while I wait for it I'll ride with just the 52t.

About the front shifter, I'll see if I can work something out for it. This is a low budget bicycle and the process of making it a 1x is also going to be low buget.

Front shifter - as a stopgap you can get one of those barrel clamps from an electrical connection (those old black jobbies that you use to connect electrical wires together) then slide that onto the cable (with the housing removed) as close to the shifter as possible, with the shifter set to the lowest gear (8, in your case) and crimp the cable. Then cut. Bam. Shifter won't be able to shift

He's right. Road and mtb shifters / derailleurs are not compatible. Different pull ratios

But but but ..... a 9sp road shifter is compatible with a 10sp MTB RD

*BTW* - I don't find the left lever 'flappy' (I am running 1x) but I may just not be as aggressive as others

I am hoping the 8 speed Sora road shifter plays nice with the 8 speed Acera RDM360L. That is crucial for this whole exercise to work, otherwise I'll have to bail and put all the new stuff in the classified section to try and cover the less

Yes yes yes... but why would you want to, unless you've already got half the parts available and a limited budget? 10 sp road & 10 sp mtb just won't work.

That's true and why I ended up with that config. Touche mate!

quote right with the 9sp RD....

But you have something far worse, a single RH exposed gear cable from your RH STI..........I could never stare at that :)

I am running all SRAM shifting gizmos, 1X10 on my roadie. Double tap road shifters, X09 rear derailleur, 11-36 cassette. Front is a MTB because I can spin the 38t fast enough on the 11 rear to make it more useful. Also, I like the Race Face narrow/wide chain ring.

Would post a pic if I could figure out how...????

That sounds very pricey to me. The past weekend I rode the one tonner and apart for climbs I was on 52t in front all the time. Lowest I went on the climbs were 42tx23t. Therefore 38tx11t won't cut it for me on my road bike.

Due to the budget nature of my bicycle I opted for a 48t Dural 5083 Alloy chainring to bolt onto my existing FSA crank. At the back I will be running this entry level Acera pair.

All parts so far total to about R1k. Just waiting for the chainring which was mailed from the UK - so it could take a while but I am hoping to ride the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour on my 1x setup.

That looks like a nice setup, I was going to do the same until I got my hands on the shamans shifters, they just felt better. My setup was a bit pricey, only because I opted for the lighter cassette and had to buy the SRAM shifters, would have been %75 cheaper if I didn't.
