Are my rims tubeless convertable?

Hi all.

I have a 2015 Titan trail 29er XL that comes with standard Titan entry level rims. Would I be able to use the tubeless conversion kit on them and would I have any problems further down the line if I did?

...or should I rather just buy new rims?

The tyres are the standard Titan racing tyres. Could I use these after converting or should I rather look at the racing Ralph or maxxis crossmark/Ikon tubeless ready tyres?

I weigh 125kg's and ride a little on road when I can't get on the gravel as well as a golf course trail. I am from JHB.

Cheers ;)

I have a Titan Comp 29er. Took it to Ridgeway Cycles at Greenstone, Edenvale a few months back for the conversion. Was going to do it myself, then decided to pay a bit more and get the pro's to do it. I kept my original rims, got the conversion done and got new tyres, for R1,800.

Best money spent on my bike so far.

Tubeless advantages:

Can run lower pressures, thus more grip

Faster fixing of a flat in race, ream, plug, bomb

Maybe cheaper in the long run, no more need to buy slime tubes every couple of months

Rotational weight savings where it matters most, on the outside of the rim

No more snakebites on tubes

Disadvantages:

Can be a mission getting the tyre to seat onto the rim. I did my conversion self and had to learn all the tricks. Had to use a bomb to seat on tyre, other one I could seat with a normal floor pump. I also 1st put a tube in, pumped it up, then it seated on both sides. Deflated, opened one side of the rim, removed tube, and then soap water on bead and pumped like crazy, or bomb ... Put sealant through the valve with the Stans syringe.

Sounds more difficult than it is.

Hi,

Don't hesitate. The money you spend is worth every cent. It is the closest you can get to hassel free riding in the dirt,

Same weight as you. Being able to run at lower pressures even with my weight is the defining issue for me

Thanks Dominion!

Which tyres etc did you get for that price and what difference did you notice once you made the change?

On the front I got Vittoria - Barzo. And back is Vittoria - Saguaro.

The difference is massive. It is the best thing I have done to my bike.

I am going way faster on tight turns in the dirt, and with increased confidence too.

My first big save from tubeless came in the Van Gaalen MTB 50km Challenge a few month's back. In the last 5km I got a puncture. Really!! Sealant spraying out everywhere.

Stopped, gave the wheel a spin, stuck finger over the hole for 5 seconds. Sorted! Back on the bike and going. Only one person got past me.

You wont go wrong with maxxis crossmark or ardents . I got crossmark on the back and an ardent in the front. Some might say they are on the heavy side but they are as tough as nails.

You could pick up a bargain on tyres at the 947 cycle expo , so its worth a visit even if you haven't entered.

We biked the  !kwattu mountain bike trail-West Coast a couple of  weekends back .Back Tyre started feeling softer than normal towards the end of the ride ,but we we were close enough to the end point not to stop and pomp.

Back home we removed close to 40 thorns from front and rear tyres between the two bikes.

Topped up the sealant and good to go.

Wow. Thank you for all the replies!

Really helps a lot ;)

If I were to do the conversion and purchase a Maxxis crossmark, which version should I choose? Exo,TR...etc?

Posted

Is the L/UST the latest version or same thing as the T/R exo etc?

There were mixed variants at my LBS which confused me even more...

Will the Lust or UST fit on my standard rims?

It seems that this technology is readily available in the crossmark and Ardent...
