Now. Lets talk about the lack of sunshine ....

My kids are currently going to the MERC - Marine Education and Recreation Centre - where they run around outside / paddle board / kayak etc.

My son, who's skin is pretty sun resistant, got fried.

We normally don't much worry about him as his sister is the opposite - fair skin (they're twins, before anyone gets in with the milk-man comments...) but from now on he's gonna get pasted with sun screen as well.

The sun here has a bite.  Not much ozone above us apparently.

But speaking from exactly one year's experience(!) summer here is pretty good - we had sunny days most of summer, winter gets a bit drab.  The Kiwis all seem to shoot off to Bali/Fiji/Hawaii come end of Sept which is when it's been drab for a while.

Same as the Poms all heading for warmer climes in Feb.

We went to Karikari because we don't know better...

(sound on for the kids commentary)

Great to hear about the weather, sounds good????

How is the nz cycling scene with regards to races and clubs? Are there many local races with active clubs? Road and mtb riding?

I don't do any races or belong to any clubs so not too sure around that side of things, but what I can say is that here in NZ trail riding and enduro are way bigger than XC.

So XC races may be hard to come by. No Nissan Trailseeker type events with 2000+ fun-riders. Quite a few enduro race though, if you're that way inclined.

In general though cycling is big. Especially MTB!

I think there is way less races and clubs etc here in NZ than in SA.

Talking MTB and Road.

Agree though, enduro racing is much larger here and by enduro I mean in the term as we use it in SA, here in NZ it means something totally totally different. Here enduro is like the long distance nissan trail seeker races. (so bikes generally with small travel suspension)

2W in NZ is enduro in SA - the race atmosphere is buzzing with plenty of riders around!

Another good...

The NZ blood service has an app with a feature that notifies the donor when their blood has been used to save a life.

This probably gives donors a real perspective to the important work that they are doing, and hopefully encourages further donations.

Either way I think it's a nice touch.

my wife donates regularly as well and we also like seeing when the blood is used.

Unfortunately, I have been banned from donating for life. It’s a shame, I wish I could donate.

I should get back into it. I used to donate pretty regularly once upon a time. I then started travelling a a fair bit to Malaria, Yellow Fever, and even Ebola zones, so wasn't allowed to donate.

My dad was in a similar boat to you. Also banned for life but really wanted to try make a difference. In his case he was able to donate platelets.

Anyone done this and have any tips maybe or ideas?

What's the vibe like there after the rugga? Think they may take it even more seriously than we do as they are used to a team that consistently performs well.
