Morning!

This morning my 5km old SRAM chain broke on my MTB sending me OTB in the middle of an intersection. In the process breaking my speedometer, bending my XT brake lever and left my with multiple scares. I want want the chain replaced by SRAM, do you think I am unreasonable?

If the chain broke because of a defect, then they should replace and technically cover all other damages (as specified in the CPA), however if it broke because of incorrect installation, you don't have a chance.

I only removed 2 links (the chain was the correct length), so I didn't mess with adding any links, chain was in 7th gear when it happened (running1x10). I didn't think I installed it wrong, been doing it for 4 years... We will see how it goes.

You don't need to be an engineer to install a chain, but I can see them coming with "was the chain installed by a qualified person at your lbs".

That is true. But on the other side, why do they put the instructions with the chain if only a "qualified person" can install it... But yes I can see this argument coming!

How do you do OTB when breaking a chain?

I would think that if you are standing powering hard, say to get through an intersection quick, and the chain breaks at that moment that you may not do a superman but you surely will go over the front of the bike ....

That is my 'hypothesis' anyway

easy, i did it before and the front chainrings ran up m leg leaving lots of greasy bloody holes in my calf

I put my weight more to the front, that way I don't wheelie going off the line, as soon as the chain snapped I was on the bars and with the momentum and the cleats I pulled with the cleats and that send OTB.

Did you install a new cassette?

Fitting a new chain onto a worn cassette can lead to problems. Even if you fit a new chain onto a "used but still in good condition" cassette you should test it carefully. Expect it to skip and jump or do stuff till proven otherwise.  Then the new chain will have to wear in and settle down. (I guess it won't last as long as it might if it were installed onto a brand new cassette and chain-rings - but I am not sure how to measure that.)

So bottom line if you fit a new chain you should ride the first 10km carefully, so if something breaks you don't go OTB...

Fitted a brand new XT cassette with it, the drivetrain was new.

Skip and jump perhaps, which at worst may make you go over the bars, but I doubt it would 'cause' a broken chain?

To be honest here, a chain breaking is a fairly common occurrence due to a number of different factors. The one that made yours break? No one will be able to prove it.

I think you're being a bit ridiculous by asking for a new chain from SRAM. Just buy one and move on with life.

Yes, brand new XT cassette, the whole drivetrain is new. I replaced everything when I did the 1x10 convention, because everthing was 70% worn, and I didn't want to mix that with new and old parts.
