Slight hijack: I have often thought about swimming at the VA but have absolutely no idea what the correct etiquette is (other than wearing a swim cap and not peeing in the water). Must you ask to share a lane with someone? Can you have more than 2 people per lane? What happens if someone is faster than you, is it like singletrack and you have to pull over?

Just yell TRACK!!  :whistling:

Have you ever thought of approaching one of your local schools and ask if you can use their facilities during the times they are not in use. I'm sure you can come to some sort of agreement for a small fee.

The only problem I see with this could be the accountability of the school should something happen to you during your swim. But then again they can incorporate some sort of indemnity in the agreement.

I've tried this. Today actually. Their response was: "ya-no we did this for a while but the admin was too crazy, but if you join X's group (R400+ p/m) we can organise something.

That said. *That* school also has the 50m length. And the R400+ p/m training group includes cycling and running as well - which I may join in the month leading up to the competition.

Kings Park Pool (Durban) charge R15 for a session. I think you can get 30 vouchers for about R12 a voucher, but not too sure. Was swimming once a week at Virgin, but as I used the gym for nothing else, R100 per swim was a bit hard to justify...

My point exactly. I don't have any other uses for a gym. Since I'm a beneficiary-Vitality member I "only" pay R3000 p/a. Which is way too much for a-once-a-week-25m-crowded-indoor-pool-with-four-lanes-only.

Don't worry about faster swimmers, if you are swimming in a lane with other swimmers try keep between the centre (usually the black line on the pool floor) and the lane rope so there is room for someone to overtake, preferably closer to the lane rope.

No you don't have to ask, but if you get the chance and there is only one other person in the lane then it's not a bad idea to ask and maybe suggest that you split the lane (one keeps left and the other right) between the 2 of you so as not to have to worry about getting in each others way.

If there are more than 2 people then you should all swim in the same direction and on the same side...kind of like a circle with 2 long straights between 180 turns i.e. keep right (or left) at all times unless you are overtaking (then you have to make sure you don't swim head on into someone coming from the opposite side.

When you turn at the wall, turn roughly in the middle of the wall or on the side you will be swimming after the turn. DONT just stop in the middle of the wall and rest there, if you want to stop to rest then stop on the side of the wall right next to the lane rope and on the same side you just swam on.

Try not swim breaststroke if there are others swimming in the same lane but doing a different stroke...the breast stroke kick action takes up soooo much space and often the person swimming breast stroke is blissfully unaware of this and the potential dangers its poses... a kick in the face, solar plexus or.... is not a way to make friends in the pool

If you are slower than the other swimmers, try not push off or start in front of them just as they are about to turn and start a new length...

Don't worry about peeing in the water, as long as you are well hydrated and not overdosing on vitamins no one will notice (pee will be clearish)  hehe just kidding of course

Enjoy, and don't forget to breathe
