So are you permitted to ride that coastal road from Ballito to Umhlanga/Durban? AND is it safe?

We will be on holiday there early Jan but will be training for 70.3 East London so need the rides.

from umhlanga to ballito you can ride on th M4, between Umhlanga and Durban you must ride through the suburbs and get off the M4. It is not safe to ride on the M4 between Durban and Umhlanga.

I nearly wiped out four heroes three weeks ago on my way to the airport.... between Durban and Umhlanga ride through the suburbs

I would prefer a group ride - no ambition to go on those roads alone.... what about faster groups?

I can imagine their are some really strong clubs down there? And many should be training for IM70.3 yes!

I am sure Cycleshere have a group ride....contact greg or the bike and bean on the beachfront would be able to assist.

Other wise there is Toti  roadies...they have a facebook page.

the other way to do it...if you are looking for fast groups...Strava...find the top 10 in the segments between Durban and Umhlanga and send them a message.

Join the boys & girls at East Coast Cycling Club for their group rides. Always happy to welcome a visitor to the rides :)

Club chairman is also a hubber (Dazshell). Give him a tinkle - he'll gladly hook you up.

Club rides leave from the very safe & secure Suncoast Casino parking lot and generally head north from there.

When you talk about 'strong', how strong is that?

The 'A' group at East Coast Cycling average around 30 km/h for a 90+km ride up the coast and back. They're a social club, not a racing club.

But if you are a racing snake badass vet, then you'll want to ride with the Tri-X Multsport guys who ride from Umhlanga. You'll need to wear your bigboy pants though, they don't mess around. Send me a PM if you want their details.

If you really want to know what death feels like get hold of the Bluff Meat Supplies guy's who are mostly older vets riders but they have finished 3rd & 7th at DC for the last 2 years.

Just moved down to the coast staying in Durban north working at the airport, any chance its safe to cycle to work?

those are busy roads, especially during peak hour. M4 would be a better option vs the R102, but still dangerous imo.

There are routes that are open to cyclists but not sure I would recommend them alone!  We ride them on club rides on the weekends with no problems but, eish, alone???

If you want to give it a go the options are Umhlanag Rocks Drive, M41, R102 and turn off at the back of KSIA.  Otherwise, M4 to Umdloti, inland to Verulam, R102 and then off at the back of KSIA but the latter option takes you through a very dodgy squatter settlement called Waterloo!
