lerouc Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 I'm a local Gansbaaier and have done Gansbaai to Hermanus and back to Gansbaai twice... BUT on a MTB on the gravel alongside the road. Definitely not for a roadie. Seen a lot of guys (roadies) doing from Hermanus to Kleinmond and back. Happy cycling and be safe on the road. I've done the Gansbaai to Stanford back over Grootbos, Franskraal back to Ganbaai on my MTB a few times. But also on the gravel next to the road.
VeloRacer Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 This past saturday 3 of us rode from Goodwood to Hermanus and back again. We clocked up 305kms for the day. We continued past Hermanus to Standford and soon realized that its not a great idea.No shoulder plus speeding cars = not worth it. we turned around 3kms later

Suidwes Boytjie Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 This past Saturday I saw about 5 or 6 cyclists on mountain bikes on the Stanford to Gansbaai road. It was raining at the time and being weekend just before Christmas, the roads were fairly busy. But this group of airheads were happily cycling on the tar (narrow road, no shoulder) while there is a perfectly rideable gravel verge two feet to their left. I am always amazed to see people on mtb's cycling on tar when there is an imminently (gr and sp?) rideable gravel option. The cyclist who made up the tail of this party was about 2 meters from the edge of the tar and was struggling to keep a straight line. Another option for roadies is to go up the Hemel & Aarde Valley, they are/were busy tarring the road up to Shaw's Pass, but the construction co went belly up and the work is not completed but you can add a good few km's including a nice steep climb on the tar. If you are on a mtb you can add a lot more kilo's by going east at the foot of Shaw's, lots of rolling hills and a lekke area to explore. I must be honest... i have shouted at some cyclists cycling past them when they do this. We all go up in arms sometimes when we hear of cyclists been knocked over or even worst being killed. But if you ride a mountain bike and there is more than enough gravel to ride on and you cycle on the tar.... I'm sorry than you don't deserve to have a mountain bike.

JohanMalan Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 I commute along the Stanford / Hermanus road almost daily, just stay off the tar, the side of this road is very rideable on anything from rigid SS to duallie. Just watch out for big glass spill near Sir Robert Stanford, stay on the left coming from HermanusAll kinds of options after Stanford along the Elim road.
Cav' Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 I'd like to ride from Hermanus to Rooi-Els and back either the 30th or 31st (starting at say 04:50) If anyone is in the area that day (road bikes) send me a PM if you want to join.

JKK Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 I rode Gordons Bay to Rooiels and back last week. Beautiful with lots of nice climbing. Strava says 2000m of ascent in 52kms. Including a trip up to the water works. Awesome viewpoint up there!
Cav' Posted December 31, 2015 Posted December 31, 2015 Did the Hermanus/Betty's Bay route yesterday, the wind was to hectic to push to RooiEls.
Velouria Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 What he said. Could not find a non bike shot from Red Hill. Sorry. I think this settles it. Clarens Drive has the better views: http://i63.tinypic.com/2qwix5v.jpgHelen Grobert
