as the title says, what can be done to make this bike lighter?

Bike is a Giant Trance x4 model http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/trance.x4/7321/44098/#specifications

My GF has been riding this bike now for almost a year and she is really enjoying it, only problem now is that the weight of the bike is becoming an issue so I am now looking at what can be done to drop some weight off the bike.

I am currently looking at the following for now:

- wheel change from the standard SXC-2 to Easton EA90XC - found these going for R2500

- groupset change from old deore to new 2 x 10 SLX (crank, bb, cassette, derailer, shifters and chain) - still looking for a set availble

- handle bar and stem maybe - still looking

- new tyres (UST tubeless will be a good start) - still looking

Any other suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated?

DON'T GET CROSSMARKS! Whatever you do.

Wheels, you've already done. Get a set of Onza Canis tyres, which are tubeless and relatively light as well as grippy. Do a tubeless conversion with some duct tape and a tubeless valve - tubes are HEAVY.

Existing crank will be FAR heavier than an SLX unit, so that's a worthy upgrade. As will the cassette. Shifters and derailleur will be lighter, but not by much.

Fork may also be a place you can save weight - Is it a Recon Silver? If you go for a Reba you'll be saving approx 600g on that alone.

Rest of the stuff - the curve starts getting a bit ridiculous ito Rand spent for Grams saved, so unless it's broken, don't replace it.

I have the same trance X4, my first love that my wife rides now and then.

The fork (RS TK coil) you should upgrade

The SX-C wheels are very heavy, that's where the "Boep" sit

The groupset is not That heavy, the crank is hollow core, but consider 1 x 10

(I did a stage race with my X4, stock standard)

Your biggest gains will be on:

Fork R2500+-  - (remember you will need a 120mm or more since it is a Trance)

Wheels R3000+-

Tyres + tubeless R1000+-

Crank R1000+-  (Would wait for a XT rather than SLX... price is about the same and weighs slightly less)

= R7500+-

the rest is even more $$$$$$ in small amounts (which adds up quick) saving small amounts at a time only.

you could get it down to 11kg with doing EVERYTHING but the above should get it to 12.5-ish and not fully break the bank if you can get cheap enough parts - however you looking at lots of $$$ still.

how much does the bike weigh now? 15kg?

why not sell it for R5000 Add R5000 and buy a full XT +Fox suspension 12.5kg+- bike...

just saying... not my for sale add either....

Morning.

I have the exact same bike bought new in 2011. I have upgraded the wheels and the fork over time (AM Classics and RS SID respectively) which made a big difference for me (the wheels the most though). Busy doing a 1x10 conversion at the moment (new Kalbo oval chain ring(s), XT 10spd rear derailleur, Shimano Saint 10spd rear shifter; this also allows me to neaten up the bike and get rid of the front shifter and deraileur). I have the original crank set stripped and off the bike at the moment as I await the chain rings and it does not feel too heavy to me so I will not be swopping it out for slx or xt yet. Looking forward to riding the bike once everything is in place! Let me know if you have any questions and I will see if I can help.

Ciao.
