Hi Guys,

I just bought me a Trek road bike and took it for a spin for about 45 minutes. This morning it felt like i was abused the way my bum was feeling.

What would you guys recommend for a decent cycling shorts with proper support ,but not too expensive. Does not have to be made of gold.

Any recommendations in Cape Town where they sell them.

Do you guys also recommend this Silicone Gel Pad Seat Cover

You can get cheap ones from mr price sport but dont expect much, otherwise i have had a couple of pairs of the entry level first ascent shorts, they retail usually between R500-R600 which works for me and i am a big guy.

When you get more into and start riding for hours on hours then start searching on here for bib shorts, but assos ones start at R1500 or something like that.

Decent shorts is not even half your problem.  Hardening up is the other half.  Soft seat = numb/sore backside.

IE:  TITS.

There has been much said about this - do a search.

I've got three pairs of these. I ride everyday, anything up to 3 hrs and I rarely have a problem. Cheap & Cheerful.

Welcome to cycling Stevie G, your ass will be sore until you ride it in (TITS = time in the saddle) so no amount of money spent on shorts is going to help initially. Once your TITS are big enough (sorry, couldnt help myself) then you can start shopping around for decent shorts / bibs.

You can get cheap set of shorts at Mr Price Sport and they work quite well as Bonus pointed out. I prefer First Ascent for both shorts and jerseys. Comfortable and stylish and long lasting. The Mr Price Sport shorts will set you back approximately R300 and the First Ascent one's range in price depending on the shop you're buying from but they should be approximately R600. I'd recommend going to either Bridge Cycles or Olympic Cycles both will give you good service imho.

Went the cheap route and I revitalized 2 good Brand bibs of mine with new chammy's at Howzit in Woodstock @ R180 a pop. Used them on a couple of 150+k rides over the last few weeks and no issues at all. Cheap temp solution till I get some new bibs..

Hard saddle + hard arse =

I sometimes commute up to 45 min with out cycling shorts.

T.I.T.S is your friend!

Happy cycling.

This.

A fancy expensive bib or shorts is going to help you zip if you do not spend time in the saddle-with or without padding.  I only use padding for rides longer than 3hrs.  A decent saddle is also a MUST.  Without which the padding will not help anyway?

I Did the DC in DEKO bibs. Originally bought from buycycle but they dont stock them anymore.   http://www.jaymall.co.za/collections/cycling/products/deko-maya-bib

Here is some feedback regarding the DEKO bibs. We did the DC in 6h34. I had no issue all the way. We rode in cold and wind and wet weather. Rained for +-100km of the race. Ass was not sore afterwards or any other discomfort. I had the usual bum tiredness for the looong ride. The only thing I found out is that the pads is a little hot with no "vents". For the price this is excellent bibs. I would buy 2 more.

Rapid Sports have good cheap bibs R 500 - R 600 have done 16 hrs non stop in a pair no issues.

But Ja TITS is prerequisite.

Edit: Also no shorts Bibs are the only way to go.
