I want to organize a STRAVA event. We have over 30 segments in an area covering about 70 km of singletrack and jeeptrack combined. Some segments covers reverse timing as well.

My idea is to open up a weekend of familiarising and racing. Come and go as you want. Flat fee of say R300(3 days riding).

Winners take all concept - minimum of R 5000 per male & female guaranteed. Trailfees will be applicable. List of spesific segments to be known beforehand.

STRAVA's word..ie leaderboard is final

My problem is how to have a fair contest??? Buffalo category?

Uphills and downhills to be combined and weightings to be determined.?

I will appreciate all comments and suggestions and this will be open source work/planning in progress. All rules can be changed :)

Proper venue facilities for relaxing/eating/music/recovering will be put in place.

Accommodation is easy around here and even tenting can be considered if the demand warrants it.

Plse help guys/girls :)

I have already started marking our STRAVA segments with START and FINISH signs that makes riding/chasing the leaderboard a lot of fun :)

Is dit dan nie meer lekker vir jou om al die KOM's op Bredasdorp vir jouself te he nie  :whistling:

This is very nice idea.

We have something similar every year.

Some input. (just some notes, it is far from perfect)

1. We do it as an "Enduro" style. So only "relativley" downhill segments are use.

(Take note: not Greg Minnaar style DH segments). I think this help level the field as far as weight is concerned. It focus more on skill.

2. Only do  3 to 4 segments otherwise it gets too long and less people have fun.

3. Our event runs over one week. (it is our at local bike riding area so  not much daily payment is needed, most have their season pass)   This opens it up for the guys that work to come and have their runs before/after work.

4. Say there are 3 segments the winner is the one who have the fastest combined time for all three segments in ONE DAY

Thus you go can and ride for  the whole week, but only your total fasted day counts.

Not your fasted run on every segment.

This format maybe a bit different from your idea, but perhaps it gives you some ideas.

Well done for taking the initiative and best of luck.

Oh yes . .

Make sure you segment starting and ending makers is really in the correct place.

Have had bols-ups where some riders rested and prep themselves about 10-20 meter before the stating sign and unknown to them the segment had actually already started

on the GPSs.

Or they stop at the end marker but according to the strava/gps it the end is still 10 meter on.

Sounds like a nice idea and should be a jol.  But...

I wouldn't pay R300 unless I thought I could win.  (If you were raising money for a cause or something I would happily partake - but if the money is just going to be handed over to the winner I wouldn't be so keen).

So you may find yourself with 10 or maybe 20 entrants that think they have a shot.  I don't think Joe Soap who is 128 on the leader board is going pay to ride.   He will probably still ride the segments just to see where he ends on on the board, but I doubt you will get any cash out of him.

This may or may not cause problems with your financial calculation.

But as per my first sentence - it should be great fun with a good atmosphere.  So worth pursuing....
