2016 motivation for getting lighter and faster

Recommended Posts

Last year i fell short of 2 of my goals...

1/ Ride from the bottom of the M19 to Pinetown...this is now a priority for 2016...would have completed it already but security on the climb is an issue...i will do it with a group soon.

2/ Loose enough weight to go below 100 kg...only managed to drop from 128.1 kg to 105 kg then went back up to 108 kg in 2015...now in panic mode because i just cant seem to drop or maintain the weight.

This year my goal is to get lighter and faster.

Lighter....I want to get down to around 95 kg.

Faster...When i started in Jan 2015 my avg speed was around 19km/hr...middle of the year it went up to around 25km/hr...by Dec 2015 now at around 27 km/hr and improving slowly...unfortunately i dont have any devices on my bike to measure power...cadence or HR...so for now i just measure by the avg speed at the end of the rides...I hope one day to keep up with my mate at 50 km/hr around the circuit... one day when i get thinner and faster...so far i have only managed to get to 42 km/hr and stay there for a short period of time.

How am i gona achieve these goals...a healthy eating plan and lots more time in the saddle...I also want to join a cycling club...i have latched onto a few social rides with both cycle specialist (the fellas in the orange shirts) in December and last weekend enjoyed an airport loop from Durban with kings park cycling club (kpcc yellow shirts) the riders in both groups were very friendly and made me feel welcome...thanks ladies and gents.

Please feel free to share your goals for 2016 and how you plan to achieve them...if you want to share your eating plan and strava profile please feel free to do so.

Yoh and I was chuffed with my going from 95kg to 87kg... Very Well Done ALREADY...

I'm finding Strava to be excellent motivation.. Seeing those PB's stack up on the different sections of my favorite routes just keeps you pushing just a little harder every ride. Also following some cyclists in and around your area (even if you do not personally know them) helps keep tabs on what they are doing and that tells me if I'm riding enough.

In my case I also follow Daryl Impey as he rode alot in my area. There's a few sections where Im only a second or two slower than him (even though he sets them on a 150km ride where I do it on a 70km ride)...But the idea is to measure myself at how well i'm improving.

The main thing that made me drop the 7kgs after I struggled for 4 years to go below 95kg was fasted rides... At that stage I could only manage 40odd kms but soon became lighter and could go further on an empty stomach..

The Golden Rule is whats measured is improved.. With Weight and Average Speeds.. As long as you can see how you perform on Strava and keep track (write it down or spreadsheet it) of your weight you should stay motivated...Whats better than seeing that you are now 200th of 1000 overall riders and then the next week improving to 175th or 150 etc.

As the Old Timers say, It does not get any easier, you just get faster..

To be the fastest 50 year old in any 1 of the segments around the circuit in durban...this is not going to be easy...there are some fast ballies out there with many more years cycling experience.

This may not happen, we had a 50 something year old from Durban ride with us at the DC this year, when I say ride with us, he sat on the front and put our entire team into the hurt locker for 5:30 minutes.

The M19 is no longer a goal...just tooo risky

The fella i chase around my area is Martin Hillerman the all time KOM holder of all our segments  in our hood...the fella looks like chris froome and rides like him...i was chasing his one segment ...his best was  2.45 the whole of last year...I managed to get to 3.08...just to up the game he went and did a 2.30 this year...i would put money on it that he has a smile on his face when he completes the segment knowing he has just made it that much more difficult...wait till i get my mechanical doping bike and find out where lance got all those drugs...i will show him ;) (just kidding)

you must understand for me to do it in 3.08 means by the time i get to the end of the segment i have to put the bike down...suck air for 10 minutes trying to get my breathe back then freewheel home.

There are some fast ballies here in Durban...his name?

thats why i narrowed it down to the fastest 50 year old...not 51-9...and i know i have my work cut out to try...if i dont achieve this goal...hopefully there will be other benefits like being thinner and faster ;)

seems like you just making it difficult for yourself with all the goals, targets and chasing down segments. Understand that it may help to motivate you, but just get out there and enjoy yourself. Be it running or cycling, its really all about having FUN.

While climbing one of the hills someone mentioned how much fun it was.

Well, I have been out of commission for the last few weeks. I was/am seriously ill and even had to have an emergency operation. Plus side is that my tummy looks alot flatter than before.

I need to still weigh myself to see the difference as I am now missing some parts.

Wishing you a speedy recovery

So after not racing or riding in 4 years I am finally back on the bike,

My goals for 2016 are as follows:

Dropping my weight back to 68-70kg (currently almost 80kg),

MTB Seeding down to under 30 (currently 55),

Picking up my average speed from 19km/h to 24-26km/h over 60km,

Kicking this disgusting smoking habit,

And complete my first Ultra Marathon without dying.

So far im down to 77kg, my seeding is still the same and I seem to relapse daily with smoking,

But if all is accomplished I can get my new frame  A Santa Cruz Blur XC

I wish everybody luck with the goals they have set for 2016 and beyond!

Have you tried hypnosis for the smoking. Thought I'd never be able to quit. Cost me around R900 and 1 visit, haven't touched one since. Downside is it really doesn't help the waistline. For the last 30 years I've been between 79 and 82kg . Now sitting at 92[emoji24] Good luck

Impressed with my old man, he has been plodding along on his bike for years, done about 21 Argus's. Problem is their idea of training was constania nek once a week and the 90's fun ride in the Cape. He hovered around 92kg for ages, being over 6ft not noticeable.

I Signed both him and my mother up for DC with Pure Savage compact and they have been riding now twice during the work week and a long ride with the outriders on weekend.

He has lost 6kg and down to like 84kg and took 20 minutes off his best time at the Argus klapping a 3:25 at 62 on his 21st argus! Mother also snuck in a 3:27 a day after her 60th[emoji14]

They really cannot believe its taken them this long to get this fit as they are enjoying their riding so much more being lighter and not out of breath the whole time.

Great motivation to keep ticking away at the KM as it just gets more enjoyable!

That's impressive

Good advice and the more you enjoy it the more you'll do it. Win win

Yes but next time you will only need to suck air for 8 min, and then 5 min and before you know it you can chase the next segment straight away..

Also, trying to compete (for me) with the likes of Impey ( who is just as tall as I am 1.83, but weigh 70kgs) is not wise.. It's like putting taking two identical engines but putting one in a 4 door sedan and the other in a Hatchback. The lighter hatchback will just be in another class.

But the idea of chasing them down is what keeps us improving, shedding more weight, getting fitter and faster.. Soon you might just be able to topple him in one or two sections.

I fully agree with you said... Although I also chase segments.. I don't make it my Alpha and Omega, killing myself each ride just to try and beat it.. Rather just a gradual improvement trying to take 5 or 10 seconds at a time.. Some People do enjoy the challenge of a seemingly impossible task...

Like Les Brown says " I will rather Aim too high and miss, than aim too low and hit Dead On"

exactly, its a win win.

11 months ago I weighed 106kg, I just loved the feeling of getting outdoors and the thrill of being on a bike.

I tried on my own to lose weight for some months but it was a battle, visited a dietitian once and thats where it all begin. I am now at 88kg, very far from being the fastest, or lightest and will probably never set any KOM's on the routes I ride but the feeling I get from rolling on 2 wheels just makes me want to get out there.

I get that, but its pointless beating yourself up on every ride, that takes the enjoyment factor away. Let your mind be at ease
