1x10 Conversion advice

Hi all.

Looking for some advice:

I've recently changed from a 2x10 to a 1x10.

On my 2x10 in front ran a 38t and 26t and at the back 11-36.

I've now converted to a 32t in front and 11-40 at the back.

I noticed when pedalling down hill I get to about 35km/h and I am spinning out like crazy, on the flip side climbing isn't a problem or on the flats.

The advice I need is:

Is this normal or should I change to a 34t in front or is there something that can be done with the cassette?

If there is a link where this has been discussed previously please post it.

Thank in advance!

Rather ride 34T with 42:11 cassette. I spin out at 45km/h. More than enough for any mtb race.

Anyone make a wide range cassette for 10sp?

I have a major ratio issue running a 32T 11-36, the gaps between gears are miles too big in some places.

He Prego , the 11-36 is quite close (for a 10 speed) if you go wider (11-40/42) you are going to have an even wider gap between gears

What sort of speeds to you get when pedalling down hill or is this not an issue for you?

I also wanted to "upgrade" to a 1x10 or 1x11spd. but when i see all the issues that comes with it i wonder if it is an "upgrade" especially with me not having any issues with my 2x10 xtr setup and the fact that I only have 1 mtb.

im spinning out at around 37km/h, honestly if your pedalling faster your going downhill,

The only issue I have is towards the bottom (11T) of my cassette the gaps are large. you go from spinning to pushing way too hard of a gear...

Maybe some Gym work is needed?

Did a 1 x 1o conversion a few weeks ago. Went with 11-36 and 32t oval. I also spin out a bit around 40-45km. Climbing however is really nice.  Would also however recommend going 11-42 with 32/34.

Thank you! Will you be changing over any time soon?

You can get a whole cassette from Kiwi here on Bikehub . He does the 10 speed and 11 speed cassettes www.rapide.co.za

I believe that a 34t upfront with a 11-40 or 42 setup is perfect for almost all terrain. You start spinning out at approximately 58 km/h which is more than enough speed for a mountain bike and the climbing is very easily doable for most riders. I think Kitted has recently launched their 40 and 42 extenders. Give them a call or visit their website and order there.

I too have one MTB and don't think that its too much of an issue, but more finding out what bests suits the individual. I always like to try things out and if it doesn't work then revert back to what i am used to, but if it does work than bonus :)
