Chainstay no more stay...

Hi All,

Today on my ride i noticed that my rear wheel was very close to the chainstay and infa t looked like the tyre was rubbing against it. Got off the bike, spun the rear wheel and nothing touching the frame so i thpught perhpas it was just the angle i was looking at it amd carried on with my ride.

Oh, 3rd ride on the flat pedals amd getting much better, was faster today than last week :-).

Right, on with my wheel story, just got some time bow to fully check it out and took the rear wheel off to see if there is any rub on my chainstay protector and to my surprise a samll section was worn completely away and the cable tie was hanging on by the the thinnest piece of that plastic.

I knew then something was not kosher. Wipped off the chainstay protector and as i got to the end my heart sank heavely and the flood gates opened...tears...the chainstay was in two pieces.

I am seriously at a loss here, how could this have happened?

I saved for a long time to buy this bike when my Mongoose frame also cracked and gave in on my and now again i have no bike and sure as hell cannot afford anything else now.

Any suggestions on what i can do? A new rear triangle, are they available?

Tears...so many of them...:-(

So not cool...its a Merida all mountain 26er and think its 2008 model.

The only thing I can suggest is maybe see if you can't get a replacement chainstay from the agents, or check out the classifieds for a 26er frame and swap all your components over.

I'll be impressed if you brake a Mesa Frame.

Take your bike to an engineering firm they can weld it up for you and to make sure it remains strong ask them to add some steel flat bar to the side. Should get you up and running until you can afford a replacement.

I think it depends a lot on how well it's welded, engineering firm is best as they generally understand how to dissipate the least amount of heat to the area, but it'll never be the same.

Another idea I had is if you were to have it welded just to get general shape back and then wrap it in carbon, I've seen this done before and you get carbon to metal bonding agents now days that are fantastic. Have no idea how it hold up just another idea.

Where is the ass end of joburg?? Have sent you a reply re repair and the best way I can see how to do it. Can expect a bit of paint work to be done and addition of approximately 100 grams.
