An absolutely cracker event.

Other than a couple of tiny teething problems, it ranks for me as better than Eroica Britannia. In the UK I was a foreigner, in Montagu I was riding with old and new friends.

Thanks Stan, a job well done and good to meet all my NEW friends.

Thanks HeyYou! Wow, what a compliment! I'm very well aware of the embarrassing teething problems, but don't worry - it will all be fixed for next year. See you there!

Stan.

Just a heads up for everyone who have a way to lay hands on a vintage bike........you will not regret showing up for 2017 Eroica South Africa in Montague on the weekend of the 18th of March. (The weekend directly after the Argus)

I found a 1980s Alan for my oldest son who decided to join us for Eroica SA this year. Niels at Woodstock Cycle Works kindly promised to give it a thorough once over for me, both of us being a bit under the whip at the moment.

I'll ride the Bititan again like last year.

My younger one wants to ride his great grandfathers old Hercules from the late 1920s / early 1930s. That will be quite a challenge as the monster weighs a ton, is a single speed and has brakes that cannot stop a fart, but it was restored so well, it needs a proper outing. Moonlight Mass just isn't enough. So what if it isn't a racer! We made him a deal, we'll do the 50km and see how he copes with it. If he struggles, we'll ride the old Hercules in a relay team. At the end of the 50 km, we'll make the final call about doing the 90 km route......or just opt for the festivities there and then. Definitely not the 140km.

We booked at the Hotel, around the corner from the start. The Mrs / Minister of Home Affairs and Finances will be our directeur sportif / soigneur / photographer / team doctor / masseuse and while we ride, she will inspect the Antique and unique commerce of Montague, just to make sure the place is in good nick.

Colnago Bititan (not strictly old enough, but fits in well enough) With full 8 speed Camagnolo C Record, Campagnolo Delta brakes and Ambrosio Durex rims on Record Hubs. (I'll leave its beautiful Shamals at home for this one) The only change from last year is a bigger new cassette, for getting up them steep hills.

Are bikes with STi levers excluded from Eroica? I have a 95/96 Bianchi with Columbus tubing running an 8 speed Dura-Ace STI setup that I'd love to bring to this event but I'm assuming it doesn't qualify as vintage yet?
