i suspect what the person was trying to tell you is that part of adderley was being re-tarred because that was what i saw when passing there. its the section just before you get to Malanshoogte turn off.

Well I went there on Sunday and it's definitely gravel. So much for that info. Was hoping to incorporate adderley into Malans but alas I'll have to go the long route.

For the record the 99er Toad Race went over that gravel section 2 years ago, if you choose your line & take it gently (slow) you could come out the other side unscathed.

Yeah, i did that race. I remember the first part was rideable but as we got halfway people were falling over the place. When I saw that I got off the bike and walked the rest.

yeah that's because the roads were crowded during that race, people hurtling downhill on lose gravel then slam on their brakes when getting slightly to close for comfort, there was only going ever going to be one outcome for them. But if you are on your own you have the entire road to yourself so I reckon you'd be ok.

I hit that piece right in the front of my group not knowing that it was there.  It was smooth to start with so I just carried on.  Then it became really dodgy really quickly!!  I don't even get that sideways on my mountain bike!  But I made it through unscathed and without walking.  But I had lost my entire group who had all slowed down, so it was a lonely ride up the next hill.

the benefit of being in front, i wasn't when we got there but I managed to survive. I'll say my MTB technical ability mostly counted in my favor there.
