Who uses a shim?

Hi. My post diameter on my sprada 2 is an uncommon 31.6 (only let down of the bike).

The giant dropper post, which I can afford, only comes in 30.9mm. Lbs says they can make a shim for me with a coke can.

Before anyone ask why I don't get a rever post, I'm gonna answer-can't afford 6k for a dropper post.

Any of you guys using a shim? How does it hold up? Any problems? Also if you are using the giant post how often do you have to service it? Any problems?

I'm using a ghetto shim upfront on my old roadbike's stem: one of those plastic black garden pipes cut to length with a lengthway slit for final fitting. Been using it for 2 years now with no problems. You can imagine how wrong this can go - especially compared to a seatpost shim... but I haven't had any problems. So yeah, sounds legit. (But for safety reasons don't hold my word to it!)

Used a shim on my dropper for ages with absolutely no problems what so ever. Also didn't want to spend money on new reverb. So kept old reverb and used a shim with it.

I got a shim from USE in the UK to run a 30.9mm dropper on a 31.6mm bike I once had.

But even if I was building a bike from scratch and it had a 31.6 seat tube, I would buy a 30.9 dropper and shim it. For 2 reasons.

  1. The shim seems to protect the seat post a bit from damage within the seat tube.
  2. It gives one the freedom to use that same seat post if one ever upgrades to a frame running a 30.9mm seat tube.

31.6 is a lot more common than you think.

Get the Giant post and shim it.

I have one (and a reverb) and I love it.

I used to ride a bike with a shim. I rode it like that for 4 years. When it creaks, take everything out and clean it

Is there a local supplier of ready-made (or someone who makes shims other than the can/hose variety?

I have a 32.4mm seatpost I would like to replace and only Thomson do one (although they don't have stock in SA).Ideally a 27.2 - 32.4, or 30.9 - 32.4. Hens teeth, I know...

BTW I have used 2 shims in use for different bikes, 1 for a 27.2 - 30.9, and another 27.2 - 31.6. Both are proper shims as per above pics, both work 100%

Where did you get the shim or did you make one up?

I bought it from a friend who made it our of a golden metal.. looks like copper or zinc or something...

Why not cut a coke tin and then just flatten it or curve it to desired shape. Round the sharp edges...

Promise you mine doesn't look much different to that.

Ok cool, Thanks. Would rather use a beer can..:-).

I'm having the same issue of finding a shim. Has anyone tried the beer can shim? Does it not end up scratching the dropper? Or has anyone found stock of a 30.9-31.6 shim?

Although the excuse for more beer has never been needed

Thread revival :)

where can I find this local? 30.9-31.6

They are non-existent locally. You either need to import it or make your own.
