I am seeing elsewhere that Shimano has announced a new 11 speed 11-46 cassette compatible with M9000 and M8000 drivetrains. Its not 1st April so maybe its true.

This brings the range of their 11 speed cassette within 0.4% of the range of SRAM's 10-42 cassette but still using standard freebodies.

There are also some new chainrings for XT and XTR and a new 11 speed quicklink.

Say bye bye to 2x for a lot.

Shimano is not giving up on their front mech's. Apparently there'll be updates to current 2X11 and 3X10 cranksets to offer a wider range of gearing.

So I assume they'll be making a new derailuer for this cassette? even as it is now the new M8000 derailuer has just enough clearance for the 42t cassette, and the M9000 doesn't support higher than 40t.

Or maybe an adapter that pushes the derailuer out a bit?

This 11-46 basically brings Shimano into the same gearing range as SRAM, about 420% . So, parity, but it does not eat away at the 2x or 3x advantage where 500% to 600% gearing range is available.

By increasing their big cog to 46t Shimano gained only 9.5% range over their 11-42 offering. Compared against the full range of bike gearing systems it is actually a very small increment and I guess mostly aimed at staying competitive with their main rival.

The news release on bike.shimano.com says nothing about RDs. It says compatible with existing M9000 and M8000.

Going to be interesting to see how they do it. Will keep an eye on the developments.

I don't find my b screw is particularly far in on my M8000 rear mech with 11-42 without shifting issues...Push comes to shove you may just get a longer screw and use that.

It's HIGHLY unlikely they wouldn't have already tested and addressed this if it was a problem though :)

I know saw the article was just saying.
