Probably why Lolly drives a Lamborgini and my LBS owner drives a Corsa bakkie .........

Lolly's whole business model is based on the premise that he never actually sells the ****, just the thought of having it, or so he claims.

By the same token, LBSes should tell customers that their boxes are sturdier, thicker and they are welcome to pay R100 to look, maybe cop a feel, but under no circumstances take it home. Now that sounds like a good way to make money out of cardboard!

From personal experience and what I've read and heard I think the 'Labs biggest problem is the inexperience of some of the sales people.  This could easily have been avoided if the sales person just mentioned that the boxes are thicker' date=' etc, etc.

The same as when you go to a supermaket and they don't have toilet paper in stock, then they should let you know that they also have sandpaper, confetti and duplicating paper in stockOuch......Maybe the salesman accidently-on-purpose forgot about the used boxes and tried to sell a new oneShocked

I am a Cyclelab club member and don't mind admitting it. If I recall correctly from club newsletters received in the past' date=' they had bike boxes made up for the Argus transportation and it is probably one of these that they offered you.

The basic bike box that all bikes come in cannot be compared to those used by special transportation companies and I suspect the one they offered you was more reinforced than normal. The box used when my bike was transported to the Argus was wide enough to wrap a thick blanket around the bike, was much sturdier, and could withstand some rough treatment. It was also big enough to fit my bike in without having to disassemble it.
[/quote']

I'm going to stick my neck out here by also sticking up for Cycle Lab (disclaimer: I do not own shares in Cycle Lab, but am a member). They tend to do things the "proper" (i.e. "their") way and will quite happily charge you for it. That's the market they pander to. They don't compete with Cajees. They will supply you with a proper box (it sounds like one of their special transportation boxes from the price to me) and at the "proper" price. You are guaranteed the box will do its damndest to protect your bike.

If you don't like that, get a box free from your LBS or use bubble wrap and sellotape.

Personally, I coughed up for a Race Case. Absolutely brilliant! I recommend the compact as you can easily fit it into your car, although it does require more disassembly than the full size one.

It's a free* world...

(*except at Cycle Lab, obviously)

As far a boxes go - My experience is:

Cannodale boxes are great

Giant boxes that a spin bike were in are thick and better.

Always remeber the thicker the box the heavier it becomes so if weight is aproblem maybe try and get a light 1.

I am thinking of making state of the art Carbon bike boxes - would sell for a lot - anyone interested?
