Any training routines that can be done to help cope with a fast race start? Specifically mtb races, where you just cant seem to hang on to the front group..

Thanks in advance.

When you train, train to start fast. That should help you to start fast when you race.

Light stretching to activate various muscle groups such as lower back, glutes, hamsters

Take good time to warm-up - proper 20 minutes at least in the saddle for a flattish start

30 minutes at least for a climbing or hard start

Good warm up till you sweating then some short hard efforts.

Problem is often you have to be at the start 15 minutes before and end up cooling down.

Practise the hard starts using the same routine as what happens in a race i.e.

warm up, stand around and cool down, then straight into a hard effort just like a race start, followed by riding at just below your lactic threshold so your body gets used to "recovering" from the hard starts while still riding at a reasonably high effort.

The idea being to get accustomed to what happens at a race but without the full race duration

What do you think of this?

Warm up on rollers or magnetic trainer, even if you sit at the start line for 20 minutes, it still makes a big difference.

+1

I have the same issue. No warm up and my legs feel dead in the first 5-10km.

What has worked is a good 20 minute ride before the start, even when I had to wait 15-20 minutes after that for the start.

It looks pretty cool, but personally I think you're better off just warming up proper before the race start.

At the USN Cup at modderfontein there were some rollers for warm up. 10min on those and I was fine with the hard pace the guys were going at.

I'd also have a look at these: https://www.mypowerdot.com/

Can be used for warm up etc.

I've always wondered about those things

Anyone used them over the long term and have feedback?

I've used the compex before. It feels weird, but it definitely works. I borrowed a friend's unit and used it for a week during a really hard weight training week.

But 12k for a compex unit is a bit much . The powerdot is waaaay cheaper and I believe they are busy negotiating for a local distributor
