ZTR Flow build suggestions?

Hi all

I am looking at having a set of 29" Flows built up for touring and general off road riding.

Any suggestions as to spokes and hubs to use?  Would much prefer a silent hub but this would not be the deciding factor.

Any other advice?

Would appreciate your input in this regard.

Many thanks

There are plenty of good options...

What exactly will sway your decision? Cost, bling, weight?

If you're looking for silent, Hope is not your friend.

I recently built using Rapide hubs and their Alpina bladed spokes. Can't fault them - they are light (very light), solidly built and very well priced. Also, Wayne is awesome to deal with, if you order today you'll probably have them tomorrow morning.

Bladed more expensive and not a selling point on a MTB for me?

Have thought about the hubs from Wayne, thanks.

Bling - how do you spell that again?

Hope - noisy as hell and will drive me and others nuts I think.  Also, it will chase the animals etc away when touring.

Weight- not too much of an issue as these rims are not exactly light?

Price - think this and strength are the two issues for me.

Thanks for reply.

Then I would go for the Rapide hubs with the standard double butted Alpina spokes from Rapide, R9 each. The hubs are smooth with a gentle click. Cartridge bearings mean easy refurbishment if things go pear.

My usual favourites are Hope, I like the commotion they cause. Prices are going nuts though.

Hope - noisy as hell and will drive me and others nuts I think.  Also, it will chase the animals etc away when touring. It will yes, animals like lions, snakes, hyenas, cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, sharks are less than desirable on your cycling adventures anyway. It also alerts pedestrians and slower riders of your presence.

Price - think this and strength are the two issues for me. The way the rand falling off a cliff at the moment  a set of Hope hubs probably cost a million rands, guess that rules them out then.

Thanks for reply.

All jokes aside. The noise isn't for everyone, but Hope's are incredibly reliable and relatively easy to maintain. If price is of some concern you could look into Novatech or Bitex hubs.

American Classic can be pretty quiet if you rebuild often enough. And they're decent hubs.

I can vouch for this, had a set and they made hardly any noise.

Did the same build a couple of years back

Hope Hubs

Don't skimp on spokes and nipples - get the best

Never had an ounce of trouble with the build

If you want good value for money, easy maintenance, durability, and hubs that don't make too much noise, I'd suggest XT hubs with 6 bolt interface for the discs, and then DT Swiss double butted spokes and whatever nipples/retainers your wheel builder is happy with.

I'm fat and slow, so rather than shelling out on a custom build, I chose American Classic Wide Lightnings, and after approx 650km now, I'm still as happy as...

Exactly what a wheel builder has said to me.  With brass nipples and washers.

Sounds good to me.

I got a good deal on a pair of Chris Kings here on the Hub. Absolutely blew my mind in terms of performance. They just roll forever with very little resistance. Can actually feel like I'm going faster, especially on smooth terrain.

Also, not as noisy as I thought they'd be. The Rolls Royce of hubs if you can get a pair at a good price.

Novatec D542/541 hubs.  I would only suggest sealed bearing hubs.  For strength get the steel axle/freebody option.  Double butted brand name spokes.  Bladed spokes a waste of time - unless you adjust the orientation regularly.  May as well use Revolution type instead if you want to save weight.
