Get a trance ja, and both medium and large can work at 1.79, depending, of course.

And don't get hung up on wheelsize, trance came in a 29er flavour. Meezo making gat cos he rides one.

You didn't mention it's way faster than your 27.5" trance

....but that's none of our business

Dude...do not get a medium.

Pretty sure you'll be too big for anything remotely modern.

I'm 1.78 and ride a medium Trance. Is 1cm going to make a massive difference?

Yes, is your trance a 27.5 or 29 will make a massive difference

According to the Giant sizing chart, your statement is false. See here.

It might yes, and some people who are smaller than recommended frame size do find larger frames more comfortable.

Also dependent on (stem length + bar width) and then of course top tube length, seat angle....so ya perhaps the 1cm may not make a difference, but with his preference he should defo not just go n get a medium without trying a large ;)

I know a guy at 1.75 who prefers to ride a large.

Yes, pity about the slow rider on it.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Tried out a friends scott 26er hardtail this morning on Hoogerskraal and died 10 deaths. Not sure if the 26" wheels had anything to do with it, but it was damn hot.

The bike was a lot more stable and the gears was awesome, but i was quickly exhausted. The scott with a large frame felt small for me.

So the giant size chart says a medium could work for me.

What is everyones take on a 29er hardtail or softtail for the tygerberg mtb club trails, if i don't go out and splurg on a new 27.5 softtail.

Sizing is all about personal preference I am 1.77m started on a large but my last couple of bikes where all medium and just so much better. I currently have a trance and bought my 2nd anthem 27.5 this week. I ride the same trails you do and the anthem 27.5 with it's slacker head angle is great and you can get them around 15k if you want new I know of a couple of shops that still sell 2014 stock for great prices plus the anthem climbs much better than the trance and is as fun and on those trails and given that you just started I am guessing you're not ripping through the enduro line's at contermans?! Best advice test a couple of bikes and sizes don't get hung up with just 1 bike.

Buy a second hand 26" trail bike that fits you.

It will ride much better that anything else that doesn't fit and you will get much more bike for your money than a 27.5 or 29er at twice the price.

A large 26er will feel small

I imagine it would be harder to climb a trail with a 26er, but how much harder would it be?

Would it be so much harder that one shouldn't consider a 26er dual suspension and rather get a 29er hard tail if one can't find a 27.5 dual suspension within budget.

or will it be better to get the 26er dual and get better at climbing and enjoy the downhill more. And later on when there is more 2nd 27.5 available or willing to spend more money, then buy a 27.5 dual suspension.

Also if i bought a dual 26er will i be limiting my self that i couldn't ride more longer straight enduro type trails.

if i bought a 29er hardtail would i be limiting myself to the amount of fun i can have downhill and is a 29er dual evens a consideration?

sorry about all the questions , but really really thank you for all the advice.
